Everyone is right. It just depends on how much money you want to spend and the quality of sound you expect. I still recommend that you call Crutchfield and get their advice. The new head units have a little more power than the old ones. Crutchfield will tell you what speakers sound best with that head unit. They test a lot of speakers with different vehicles so they know what works best. You could just replace tweeters, and both door speakers now, and if that doesn't satisfy you, add the amp, subwoofer, and or head unit later. I agree that Toyota is way behind on sound systems. Even their top stereos in Limited models are not very good.

If you want to keep it cheap, but sound better look at a set of components for the front. It will sound better, but it won't be life changing. Kicker makes a set with a 6x9 woofer and 2 3/4 mid for the dash. It sounds way better off the head unit, but I will say once you add an amp then you will notice not having a tweeter up front. It has an inline crossover for the dash speaker and comes with the mounts specifically for our trucks. Crutchfield will send you all of the adapters and mounts that you will need to make it plug and play. Add in a set of fast rings as well because they do help. You could add in a Kicker Key amp that has a DSP of sorts. The reviews have been good on the Keys and any DSP is better than no DSP. That would probably run you about 600 total if you can find a Key amp anywhere. You may not even need to add an amp since you said you just want some improvement. Give a set of components up front a try and see how you like it.

If you see my other posts I tried to go cheap, but decided to add amps and subs. Lesson learned the hard way is that the factory head unit is trash and unless you get a good DSP or amp with DSP then it will never be that good. Also my suggestion would be to only put coax speakers in the rear and then only if you are going to change the head unit or add an amp because the factory head unit only puts like 5 watts to the rear. Do not put coaxs in the front and also add a tweeter to the dash. It will mess your imaging and you will have harsh highs.

To the OP, I realize this post is over a year old. I was just wondering if/what you ever decided to do? I have been looking at buying the Subaru tweeters (easy plug and play) and possibly adding front door speakers to my access cab. I don't plan on changing the head unit, would just like a little better sound. Not looking to spend much money. Maybe a couple hundred bucks.

o Respect ^. Crazy what this type of raw material costs at big box store or even Amazon.
o Cutting boards and similar "Plastic" and Bamboo are a great source of raw material. Homegoods (mid level Discount place is a great source)

Not sure how much research you’ve done so far, but this I know. The “Subaru tweeters” are Kicker KS series tweeters with a Toyota plug on them. If you buy a KS set, the 2.75” mids or the tweeters, it’s the same sound. And if you buy from Crutchfield, they kick in the mounting adapters and the plugs for plug-n-play. That’s all for my PSA. Rock on.

I bought the Subaru kicker tweeters and installed them today. Honestly I didn't notice a significant difference. Not sure if it's worth a hundred bucks..

Roger that, thanks for the quick review. I am still completely up in the air about audio plans.

IMO, just changing the tweeters makes a difference. but the biggest difference for me was changing the head unit.

I spent under 1200 and am pretty happy. Sony XAV7000 from TrailGrid Pro, Kickers from Crutchfield, and Subaru tweeters from eBay.

If you're sticking with the factory head and not add any power, I'd just swap out the tweeters and be done.
