Rite rite. I found myself looking at the FE350's last night. But damn, a small tank (2.3 gal),. granted it doesn't need to be huge either.

 

Been thinking about putting my HF box on my little rack, and using hood quick release pins to detach. The Kriega US-5 helps, but it might make more sense to have more storage back there.

Thoughts?

 

I always slap bigger tanks on them. Both my 250xcw and my 500exc have Acerbis tanks. 890 doesn’t need it.

The low slung tanks on the 890r have made riding harder off-road tracks way more manageable

I’ve used u-bolts in the past for round bars or if the rack has threaded holes I’ll mount right into that.

 

My rack is my DIY one. I can drill some holes to mount the pins. Wanted to put the push buttons inside the box, and pins on the rack side.

It may have melted a little, but this is the box:

 

This cost me $20 in materials. Better than the $100 options. Ive had several people ask me where to buy it too

Today was install accessories day!
Stainless steel motone engine guards.

I like them as they don't stick out to far like some others doo.

Nice and tidy.

Then I installed a Madstad windshield. It's quick release and very adjustable with 2 knobs. You can adjust it for height and angle to reduce helmet wind buffeting.

Right now it's set for about the same angle as the forks, it's just a starting point.

View from the cockpit. I ordered the shortest shield they offered so I can look over the top, it has 4" of adjustability.

The windshields are made to order and it really seems to be very high quality. I like that it only takes seconds to re.ove it for slower city riding and I can pop it back on for longer rides or on the highway.

 

I'm trying to figure out the jetting on the Navi. I'm watching @spencermarkd 's video on it right now, but basically so far:

- Installed the DIY air intake and ended up losing ~4-5 mph off the top end (topped out at 45 mph instead of 50).
- Pulled carb (thankfully only took about 10 min to remove) and installed bigger jets (38 pilot, 90 main vs 35 pilot, 85 main stock) and drilled out the Welch plug covering the pilot screw
- Top end seems happier now and will hit 50-51 mph (so a little faster than stock?) so I think main jet is happy.
- On stock idle/pilot screw settings the bike doesn't like to idle at all. Once warmed up it will die at stop lights and backfire/pop on decel. I can't tell if it's running too rich or too lean because both can cause backfire conditions and both can cause the bike to die (I'd guess it's too rich though with the bigger pilot jet).
- Stock air/fuel mixture screw was set 1 turn out from factory, screwing it in any more to reduce fuel mixture would cause it to die so I backed it out another turn (2 turns out) and adjusted idle speed and it's not backfiring or dying yet but smells really rich.

I haven't pulled the plug yet but I'm not sure what to do - either go back to 35 pilot, or just keep the 38? Since it seems to be running somewhat happily at idle at 2 turns out it seems like the 38 might be OK? I don't recall how the bike was running with the 35 and the new air intake (though it wasn't dying).

If I had a welder I'd stick a bung into the exhaust and just use a wideband but that's not an option right now.

 

With the freer flowing intake you will be pulling less vaccum potentially which will need bigger jets to maintain the same afr. No need to spend money on going wideband, the small honda aircooled motors (especially in stock bore / compression) are VERY forgiving. Pull the plug and see what it looks like, if you have a 95 main jet id throw that in to see if it gets better or worse at WOT.

Usually with the fuel screw you set the idle speed lower than normal, get the bike heated up, then adjust the fuel screw in and out slowly till you find "the sweet spot" where it idles the highest, then open up (richen) just a bit more (like 1/8 to 1/4 turn) and do a final set of idle speed to desired idle rpms.

Does the navi have a needle you can raise or lower?

Also keep in mind that increasing/decreasing fueling via the fuel screw or slow jet will effect all other areas as well as fueling by all 3 circuits is cumulative.

 

Sounds like it likes the 90 main, so that's good. If it were me trying to figure out the pilot I'd start by getting the a/f right for the jet thats in there now, so adjust the a/f screw until it idles highest, reset the idle screw to the appropriate RPM (Navi actually idles pretty high at factory settings, btw, you might be idling too low?), then verify with the a/f screw again that it won't go any higher. Repeat until it's happy and the highest it'll idle is at the appropriate idle, then go 1/8 turn further in.

If you can get to that point with the 38, that's great, and fingers crossed this next test goes well. If it's still smelling pig rich, try giving the throttle some quick turns. If it's bogging when you open the throttle before increasing in rpm's, thats a good sign your jet is too rich and you should try the 35 again.

And then to verify it likes the main jet it'd be easy enough to do a plug chop and check the color on that.

Do you still have the stock exhaust on? Or did you get your smoke in already?

 

100 miles, 5 towns, and 16 murals, channeling my inner Chuck today. It was fun cruising through the little towns with your head on a swivel looking at walls, I think of the 16 today 10 were surprise finds.

This one is the soil of the various aquifers/wells in Moscow, ID, kind of goofy but had no idea it existed. There’s a really cool “water is life” themed mural around the corner but it got unsalvageably damaged a couple weeks ago by some bigoted ass.

Thanks for the advice! I will try playing with the mixture screw tomorrow.

The bike only popped once while riding today and while the idle seemed low it didn’t due on me once. The issue I have with the idle is if I raise it any more the wheel spins too far from the friction of the CVT. I don’t want to set the idle too high and have any issues with the transmission (if that’s a thing).

I don’t have the exhaust yet so I guess I’ll have to do this again when that goes on.
