Hey guys/gals,I was just made aware of two trouble spots on my frame (corrosion). See pics.
I live in the DFW area and have tried calling at least 6 to 8 shops and they do not/will not do any work on frame corrosion. I’m currently at a loss as to how to get this fixed except to drive it out of state to where this is more common and find a shop up north. Any advice would be appreciated.23A491D4-E6C9-4A35-B9F7-D0738D55E54E.jpgA68F8B12-19A4-4740-9A9E-F4BA122942BB.jpg

Toyota had a recall for frame rust. Have you tried Toyota?

The recall has already expired. Funny thing is that I’ve had my truck in their shop for oil changes and such, and they’ve never said a word about this. I got these pics from another shop. (Not Toyota)

    Yea sorry man this sucks!
Dealer maintained you would think you’re good to go!
Maybe look for a welder not sure about inspection laws where you are.
Here in Vt welds are a fail unless done by a certified welder.
    Good luck man!

Trade it in at a toyota dealership. Let it be their problem.

Do you happen to know what code the welder needs to be certified under to repair frames?

Then maybe it is just another state revenue generating gambit.

Do you have actual holes there or just the paint flaking up? Usually the rest of the frame is more rusted when holes develop there. Scrape away the loose paint with a screwdriver or scraper and post back.

The Toyota dealers in Texas seldom see frame rust problems I could see how the tech doing service might never even noticed.

I have no idea how the Texas Motor vehicle code is gotta be some Texas welders that can fix this.

Shops are scared of liability and might not have the insurance to cover working on vehicles. because of the catching on fire,

No holes were found, it’s just rust scaling. There is solid metal underneath those spots. My thinking is it just needs to be cleaned up and some spray on rust preventative applied. I’ve got a few spots like that but not bad at all.

I was wondering how a Truck in the DFW area was exposed to enough winter to be a concern.

Lots of Surf fishing as the tide rolled in?

I know nothing about truck construction, but in building construction, you hit surface rust with a special wire brush to work out and remove the softened steel and active rust and then use a rust inhibitor coating. If it comes in a spray can, it's not likely to be a very effective rust inhibitor, but Sherwin Williams, PPG and others have good brush applied products that do the trick.

Ha! Why do you get a shop involved then?
    1. Scrap off all the loose paint and rust.
    2. Sand/wirewheel if you want, then degrease.
    3. One coat of Rustoleum primer
    4. Four coats of Rustoleum semigloss paint. Wait 15 minutes or so between coats.
    5. Let dry for 24 hrs.
    6. Spray a corrosion protectant like CRC Marine or Cosmoline RP-342.

I do the above to all the rock scars on my frame and axle before each winter.

I’ve had the truck since ‘09. I’ve lived all over the country Wisconsin, Colorado, Massachusetts, and now Texas. My guess would be my time in Wisconsin.

The second picture definitely looks like a hole. I'd be looking into trading it in before it gets worse.

Sorry for you to say that if you whack that with a ball peen, probe with a screwdriver and look inside with a borescope you're going to find a mess that a wire wheel and spray paint won't fix.

    Way too late for that

Please tell us how that would work. Oh yea, it won't.
