Head units

Hi there I'm new here. And I've seen a few threads on aftermarket and OEM head units. But I'd like some recommendations for my specific situation. I have a 2018 tacoma SR5 and I would like android auto. Wireless preferred(unless it's advantageous to have wired) i could always get the wireless dongle if units without wireless are cheaper. Id like to not have to modify my dash trim, so basically plug and play(i know some come with adapters so thats okay). and I'd like to not be spending crazy money (like near 1k). Idk if that's asking too much but I'd like some input on yalls experience. Thanks in advance!

Any of these will fit. Crutchfield sends you dash kits to blend seamlessly, and for a small fee, they’ll solder the harness together for you for easy plug-n-play.

I'm not sure how well Android Auto works wirelessly, but CarPlay kind of sucks. Wired is way better, so that's what I run despite my head unit being capable of both. You can certainly buy a unit that does both and then experiment. I run the Kenwood DMX957XR which has now been superseded by the DMX958XR.

In general, the items I would recommend for a solid & functional install:

Dash Trim kit
Antenna adapter
iDataLink Maestro RR2 (for steering wheel controls and OBD gauge functionality - can also run 3 aftermarket relay control accessories if desired)

$65 HRN-RR-TO2 Plug and Play T-Harness for TO2 Toyota Vehicles

HRN-RR-TO2 harness for 2019 and older Tacoma (adapts the Maestro to the truck - you splice the radio harness to the outputs on this harness for the Maestro to run the radio)
USB adapter
Satellite Adapter if wanting to run Sirius
OBD splitter (so you can plug in the Maestro OBD plug and still have an available port for truck diagnostics to hook to (inspections and such)

Crutchfield is pretty good about telling you what you need to get the job done. I would avoid the Maestro RR, they have problems with the head unit randomly rebooting (RR2 does not have this problem).

You can probably keep it under $1k if you go with a less nice radio. The adapters and such start to nickle and dime you, but for a good install they are really worth it.
