Do ‘sky-aks’ count? Had a similar predicament with my hang gliders being 16ft long and fragile (no bed-hanging allowed) so had to rack it.

That was a Leer 700 tonneau on my old truck I've since sold. It was nice for storing things in the bed that I wanted dry and not stolen, but was also in the way for things like the yaks. I've elected to not get a tonneau for my new Taco.

Does it cover the top of tailgate so it locks the tailgate too for 2nd gen Tacoma's?

This is how I haul our kayaks, except my Taco is a long bed and my T-Bar is orange ;)

my kayak is a Bonafide EX123 and my wife’s is a Jackson Tupelo. Can haul them both fine. I have hauled a third a couple of times, but not very far.

Relentless Fab hybrid bumper, 2.5” Dobinsons IMS lift, RCI skids and sliders, block heater. Rola rack. Painted FJ Steelies. Was trying to keep it stock, now slowly building for the Wisconsin trails.
My 12’ 6” kayak is right at the balance point with the tailgate down. I could strap it down, but it doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence when I need to go any real distance.
For hauling multiple kayaks it’s hard to beat a trailer. The loading height is nice and low which is helpful especially on windy days. The only downside is needing enough parking room for the truck and trailer. B001C59B-3854-43EC-91A3-25144608C057.jpg

    back to bone stock.
i have a new Tacoma on the way. this time a shortbed. i do however have the BoonDox bed extender that i use on my current longbed tacoma, so i do not forsee an issue. i stuck my kayak into my truck short by a foot, and it was not cantilevered beyond any tipping point. not even close. i may get a second or BIGGER red flag for the back.
