I realize any responses to this question will be purely speculation…

That being said.. Find myself in the unique position of needing a truck now, and yet impressed with what the 4th gen promises.

With used prices not really making much sense, I’m considering a new 2023 access cab, with an eye on potentially trading in in a years time.

Any guesses, based on (for example) last gen trade in for new gen Tundra? I’m assuming it’ll be a bath financially, just trying to make sense of a somewhat foolish decision.

Get what you want and can afford. The 3rd gen will still be a perfectly fine truck years from now and you know it has dependable reliability. If you’re going to splurge on a 4th gen, at least wait a year or two until they’ve had a chance to work out the kinks with everything.

if you need a truck now, get the 2023 3rd gen. don't buy the first year of the 4th gen.

We might be in a recession, who knows? Anything can happen, look at covid for example.

This 100%. I bought a first year 3rd gen and had all kinds of growing pains. Leaky diff, problematic transmission, and my transfer case blew right before the powertrain warranty ended.

OP get a v6 4x4 Access cab and wait it out. I'm certain someone will be willing to buy it from you near what you paid if/when you're ready to make a switch.

I don't imagine any precipitous depreciation due to the model being updated if that's what you're concerned with. I would really try to buy used though if you are really thinking of owning the truck for 1-2 years. Access cabs are available and priced pretty well, at least in my region (Bay Area). It's the used 4x4 DC TRDs that dealers are still shooting the moon with.

Usually, when the new models are announced, they start discounting the current year. Not in my area yet (a premium for new 2023's still).

I'm disappointed there is no AC TRD 4x4 anymore. No V6 as not a proponent for beefed up 4cyl. In my case, I have a plow which the mount may/may not be made for the 2024's? All my takeoffs (tonneau, steps, bed rug, cat cover) might not/won't fit the 2024. I'm not worried about trade-in but I'm thinking 3rd gens will hold their value. I was a Chevy guy before and ALL my trades (in perfect condition, low mileage) the dealers never wanted back on trade. Moving to Toyota, I've found that is never the case.

    Appreciate all the thoughts.

Re: used… Current search for an AC OR/Sport/SR5 with 4wd, 2018 and up, within 500 miles yields pretty slim pickings. And all of those are priced pretty much as new. Can get $1k off MSRP a new one without much hassle. That’s why I’ve been leaning new.

Kinda my thought too. Love everything about the the new xcab or whatever they’re calling it. But getting the dog in and out with no suicide door seems like a PITA. Ditto for anyone hauling tools gear etc.

Looks like I might pull the trigger on one this week. Thanks for everyone’s input!

I would wait until the 4th gen comes out and test drive them both.

I have had my 2016 and have had nothing but a battery. Brake light leaked but that was covered, no big deal.
Wait a minute, a brake light bulb went out last week.
Seven years of trouble free ownership.
I had a late build 2016, had the tranny flashed and it drives better than new ones imo. I put a fox suspension on it and good tires.
No rear whine, no leak, nothing. Timing cover leaks and coolant bypass leaks are still happening on new units, I never had them.
I hear all of these myths that all the bugs were worked out. Same engine, same transmission. Just some updated computer flashes and minor tweeks here and there.

The timing cover leaks even happen on the 2.7 4-cylinder motor. Will probably happen on the new motor as well.

    Just a couple
24 will be substantially more expensive (If I recall it was 10% price increase in 16 vs a 15). Based upon this, your taco should stay the same if not appreciate a bit IMO. Plus people are going to hold off on the 3rd gen due to perceived issues of a new model.

Fingers crossed... just picked up the last TRD Sport AC I could find within 500 miles. Love what they're doing with the gen4, but loving my gen3!
