@BassAckwards Good evening Robert! Wanted to pick your brain on something. Happy Memorial Day! :oldglory:Just got back from a 4 day wheeling/camping trip in KY. It was a blast! However…. After a pretty tough trail, on the ride back to camp I noticed my Transmission/ tcase sounded different than before. There is a very noticeable whine now. Almost like a supercharger sound but not as loud. Anyways I drove 7 hours home today and halfway through my transmission jumped up to 230ish degrees and I pulled over and let it cool down. The highest I’ve ever seen my trans is 215 so that was weird. It was only going up as well even with decreased speed. So anyways let it sit for 25 min and cranked it back up. Got back on interstate and drove 70 all the way home and it acted normal temp stayed around 149-175 . Whine is still there though everything shifts fine and nothing unusual besides the whine and that weird moment. Should it be something to be concerned with?? Fluid looks good at full mark and still pink OEM fluid. I do have 2 coolers so should I add more to the trans you think to account for the extra coolers? Seems like it’s cooling just fine now again. Just need another head to pick. Sorry for the long post lol.

    Sir,
I Absolutely don’t have a clue about the automatic transmission but I know the bonehead who’s selling this 36k mile manual transmission. Plus I know he has a good aftermarket clutch to go with it, if you’re interested?

Good evenin Brian, and happy Memorial Day brother! Unfortunately I am not super familiar with automatic transmissions so I’m not sure I’m the right person to ask. I will say, if it was mine and it was whining, I’d probably drop the pan, change the filter, and do a full flush on the trans. Dropping the pan would let you take a look in there and see if anything looked out of the ordinary. I have done that in the past on an 2013 Tacoma with the 2.7 and a340e. I am not sure that’s going to help anything, but that’s where I’d probably start if it was mine since I have limited knowledge on the subject. Also, if you aren’t sure if it’s the trans or t-case I’d try to isolate that between the two and it’d be a good idea to service the case as well while you’re down there. I don’t think it requires much fluid. Were you on a steep incline right before this started?

The trail we were on was a steep incline. I noticed it’s shortly after I got back in the road…

 And I would never have an Auto! I tried 3 times and absolutely hated them…. Hell my wife is 63 and she had me sell her Mazda MX-5 so she could get something to carry the dogs inside with. So in 2020 we purchased her first ever vehicle with an Auto. God I ❤️ her!

I have a manual for my DD i love them for on road. I would never have one for off road as the foot fatigue is terrible and stalling them on steep inclines is dangerous for the rollback reason.

I’ve always desired a manual in a performance vehicle and auto in large or slow vehicles. Now that I’ve found a passion for driving fast off road I wish It had paddle shifters. I’ve driven my friends manuals all over our trails and it definitely adds a degree of difficulty. I’ve had a couple manual jeeps and something feels right about them being manual, but never off-roaded them like I do my tacos

    Brian,
My one and only argument about why you consider an automatic a better choice in a vehicle with a gutless 2TR. You drive a lot more on pavement than on steep terrain so why an auto? Just because takes more effort and skill to drive in difficult terrain? Now I could see if you were in competition like rock crawling, or in a 700 hp trophy truck going across the desert over 100 miles an hour.
I really enjoy rolling my own or I guess I enjoy driving more than just riding in…. :deadhorse:

My truck is an overland/baby rock crawler. It’s made with that in mind not street driving. So that’s where we differ lol. My Corolla on the other hand is my fun manual car. Driving a slow car fast is always fun!

Did some cleanup today where the head meets the header. Also removed all of the toyota exhaust manifold studs and chased them with a M8x1.25 clean out tap. Now they will accept LS1 ARP 4341301 exhaust manifold studs.

Also cleaned out the oily grime from the intake tract that inevitably accumulates over time. Hoping my catch can and some water methanol helps to keep
this tidy in the future. Took my time and used paper towels, brake cleaner, and a pick to get everything I could. Having the motor on the crane made it super easy to move it side to side and use the sunlight to my advantage. My slight ocd may have taken over here lol. Might smooth out some of the intake and exhaust ports when the head is off for a gasket. Some of the casting marks would be pretty easy to knock down and should help with flow. These can be seen in the last pic, but there are some around the exhaust ports as well

So I intake ports were pretty oily still? o_O
Yeah I’m thinking the meth & water mixture wouldn’t really clean oil.
I’m really curious about the piston tops and valves? *I* would think it would or should have cleaned the carbon buildup a bit. But now thinking there’s not that many miles of running the mixture through the engine and as I told you an elderly lady was the original owner.

Yes the intake ports did have a good bit of build up still. The tops of the valves look super clean on the intake side. I will let you know what the tops of the pistons look like after I have some time to pull the head. I do think the oily build up is normal, but I am betting with a catch can from the start and some water methanol, it will probably be minimized.

    Thanks buddy,
I’m not worried about the engine because it was running fine before it was removed but I consider you a good friend so I’m worried. I don’t want to screw anybody but I really don’t want to screw somebody I know. Robert you have been so very helpful to me and I just want to make sure that you get what you paid for. Also if Andy doesn’t need a wire out of the wiring harness I will be sure to ship it to you. Also the computer, but Dyno Comp in Scottsdale did try to tune it w/ Orange Virus. (I think that’s the name per your information)

I appreciate that, but i dont think there's anything to worry about. Everything i have seen so far has been immaculate for this engine's age. That oily build up in the intake was much heavier on the engine that's currently in the truck, and it's running like a top. The one in the truck ran without a catch can for like 280k miles so there was quite a bit more to clean up the last time i did the head gasket on it.

Sure thing, keep me posted on the harness and ECU and if yall don't need it i would definitely be interested in it. I havent had time to ship your fan spacer off yet, but i found a clip for one of your injectors that fell into a crevice on the head, so that's probably a good thing. I will get them both sent off once i can find a small box.
