Hey guys , pay load on truck is 1180lb
I’d like to get a slide in camper if possible ,if not I’d go with truck box and roof top tent.
I am not interested to change anything on suspension yet . Maybe in a few years but like to keep it the way it is for now.
How much can I go over the suggested weight without having trouble. Also been looking at a few campers , wondering what you recommend.

Try to keep most of the weight centered over that axle the Tacoma frames are a 2 piece frame from what I heard not like a gladiator one solid piece I have a roof top tent on my 2020 an just a regular leveling kit from truxxx.com came with alignment specs an with the tent an the bed under it fully loaded an also the rack over the cab full I never had any issues, but the rack and tent don’t way much at all I don’t think. That ground tent had cots an a table also a small generator with 2 coolers a tail gate traeger grill skillets so much crap with bikes on the tow hitch had everything.

The amount you can “go over the suggested weight without having trouble” is zero pounds. (0 kg in Canada)

There is more to the payload rating than just spring rates; there is brake capacity, frame strength, transmission and gear limitations…..Toyota didn’t just pull that rating out of their tailpipe.

Bchunter is exactly right I would just load it up see how it feels then go from there with the stuff I had it ran solid no issues with hills or stopping transmission was great an motor too. If it drags then sounds like a no go endless you plan on upgrading things know what I mean

Grab a 3-4 adults, measure unloaded, have them pile in one by one.
I have a 335# always in my bed, and it sagged bad, to the point the spring and the bump stops became best of friends,,,, and that’s mostly on road.

roof top tents aren't necessarily light and most people mount them high up, like literally on the roof!
anyways, the truck can handle the weight of a camper, but there are compromises to the vehicle dynamics and potential longevity of various components.
it's not unmanageable in any way, but you should be aware that it isn't going to drive or ride like a stock empty tacoma unless you make some changes.
I have no issues with my heavy setup, but am continuously making changes to improve the setup/truck as a system

That’s a sweet setup you have in your profile pic did you change any suspension parts? An your absolutely right about the roof top tents I searched for a low profile rack so the tent doesn’t pass the cab roof thinking of how much wind it would catch. An my tent wasn’t to heavy either I slapped it up on there alone but I’ve seen some diamond plate ones that your know weigh a lot I believe mine is like a fiber glass or something.
