I finally broke her in. Went out on the trail and camping in Dinosaur National Monument. Super quiet; just me and one other tent in the campground. The ranger tried to tell me the canyon bench road was terrible and I shouldn't drive it. So I took all my food and water with me just in case. Spent half of the time in 2WD and never needed 4LO, but I did just to try out the Crawl and MTS features. Super easy. Never saw another vehicle. Even though I didn't come near testing the capabilities of the truck, it just felt like it was made for bumps, dips, loose rock, and washboards. Like I set her free. Ah.

Going from Denver to Dinosaur I got 23 MPG; it just hums on those 2 lane highways. Almost 22 MPG average over the 800 miles of my trip (stopped by the Western Slope to see mom too) including the off road driving.

Do you have the OTT Tune?

I got 22.8 mpg going from Bennett to Montrose via 70/285/50 hwy. I have the OTT tune on mine and I love it.

Gave her a bath and thoroughly scrubbed the tyres with “bleach white”.
    Removed this:

Then reinstalled the OEM air intake hose.
    IMG_3033.jpg
I also reset ECM and cleared TCU to go from Lite to Normal V10 AGM KDMax.

    Also installed this.

It was cheaper than RC brand. I only went one size up and the 1.5 MPH difference has been bothering me…still need to test drive tomorrow.

No connection issues so far. This version offers 5GHz WiFi, not just the 2.4GHz band. I'm not sure if that's the reason, but it's working pretty well. TBH, it's a clean set up and if you order from Amazon and have issues you have 30 days to return it. That's what I figured anyway.

I have been thinking about getting something similar but was thinking about pulling the USB port behind the dash hooking this up and then putting a different switch there. Has anyone done that?

    Some ideas here:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/2020-tacoma-media-port-relocation.648547/

You can find more if you search for 'media port relocation'. That switch is an odd size, I'm not aware if a replacement has been found. I just left my media usb port disconnected in the dash with the dummy switch intact, and relocated a functional one to the glovebox for an AAWireless device for wireless Android Auto.

Great minds think alike! I was headed down the same path, but ran into a big snag. The USB outlet is a different size than the rest of the switches. :annoyed: More here:

I don't have any tune. But it seems if you get the engine rolling between 1500-1900 RPM it gets great mileage; hit the interstate at 75 and it goes down a lot. Maybe it's the Atkinson Cycle range that the engine has. I get the usual 19 around town and short trips; 21 on the highway. Just like the estimates. I'm also not carrying too much extra weight (just sliders, skid, basic tools/recovery items, tonneau).

I spent 3 days camping and by then the mozzies were getting to me plus the mormon crickets were invading. Plus no network so I couldn't keep up with TW

Not at all; nor the skid. I really think you could have done it all in any SUV. Some of the road was flat and gravel; some steeps; some steep with loose small rock; and a few ruts. I let the ranger know he was a bit hyperbolic when I came back by the visitor center. Even though it was easy, I think having a capable vehicle made it a true pleasure with no worries. The truck just felt like it was in its element.
TBH, I'm not seeking places to use the sliders or skid, but I know I will because stuff happens when out exploring. My 4Runner OEM skid was pretty beat to heck and I had some close calls with the sides. Maybe this forum will convince me to change my mind :).

I just saw your mod description, "Stock-ish". Nice sense of humor; I've been watching your IG videos. You've created quite an off-road beast.
Sorry about your engine but if anyone knows how to put another in it's you. Too bad it will keep you off the trails for a bit.
