I love that the new Tacos have apple car play, however I hated the fact that it was in the front USB! It drives me insane having a USB cable just hanging! I wanted to relocate my media port to the center console! I ordered some parts I thought would work, come to find out they did not! Long story short I did the following!

After removing trim, unscrewing radio and unclipping climate control I was able to remove USB by pressing tab with a flathead.

Ideally I wanted to find a cable that fit the stock USB so I could keep that one functional in the front, I did not find it. Here are some pics of the USB, and after I took it apart.
    IMG_3195.jpg IMG_3196.jpg
    IMG_3197.jpg

At this point I thought I would just use this hide it behind panel and plug a USB extension to run to center console (which is what I did) and put empty cover back on.

This is the cable I used as an extension!

However I was still going to have USB cover with a hole when opened so I thought about maybe running another extension from center console to front. I do not need 3 USB plug ins in center console so I did just that.

    IMG_3203.jpg

I had to epoxy one end of the USB to the empty USB cover. It seems sturdy, hope it holds...

    IMG_3199.jpg

After letting epoxy dry an hr I carefully mounted USB plug and ran wire to center console. Now I have a functioning USB charger in the front.

    IMG_3207.jpg

This is what the inside of the center console looks like now. My lightning cable is connected to the new extension which enables carplay. The bottom USB is connected to the front via extension as well, top USB is open.

    IMG_3209.jpg

    Carplay from center console!

    IMG_3210.jpg

FYI this is the usb that plugs to the back of the unit, not sure if it's different from previous years. I ordered a plug that was supposed to fit back of unit and it did not.

Not really intended as a write up! Just sharing what I did today :)

I agree that's the most useless place to put that USB outlet.

I mean the center USBs. You can't even see them from the driver's seat.

If you don't have it, don't worry about it. I'm going to check out the plug this weekend anyway

The head unit will support two USB inputs with use of a hub (not a splitter.)

I spent quite a while digging around online to find the right combination of parts but haven't finished yet.

Why the hell Toyota did what they did, I do not know. The front usb for a thumbdrive and the console for android auto/car play would have been perfect.

I've tried several USB hubs, both 2.0 and 3.0. None of them worked with CarPlay. If you find one that does please let us know.

Here's another possible solution, but it's spendy:

Stay far away from that product. It’s a scam. I ordered one and doesn’t work. The company is based in China and still waiting on a refund that cost me $50 in postage to return

I think they'll have to be powered hubs to work properly. I know of an oem setup like that but it's not easily adaptable to our trucks. If I find or come up with a clean solution I'll definitely share it.

Just did mine as well the same method with a USB extension. Replaced it with a powered USB port.
I kind of don't like it seeing as it doesn't fit will. I will probably just end up replacing it with something else. However, since that hole is a bit wider and shorter than the standard swiches, hard to fit something in there.

The idea sort of stalled but I found the pieces yesterday and started back into it, its funny you tagged me today. I need to look through toyota parts info and find two key parts. Have you seen the thread on wireless carplay?
