As long a some dipshit doesn't over tighten it, and you have the right tools (filter wrench/drain), it's EZPZ. So many people mistakenly think that tightening the housing seals it, when in actuality it's the O-ring that does that...torque spec is like 18 lb ft.

I do have one, and a slew of other tools to make this shitty filter as least shitty as possible. I don’t even need to put the truck on ramps, I can just lay under it. Whole thing takes 30 min max, I’m just being a baby.

I’m telling you, if I owned this house, I’d throw a mini split in the garage so damn fast. Our minivan that we keep in the garage is still boiling hot in there because, surprise surprise, the garage is 110°+ during the day.

Our neighbors have a massive tree on the west side of our house that covers the garage with shade after like 4pm and it cools off really fast. Also have those insulation squares on the door don't get me wrong its still hot but if I had to guess its less than 100 in there my problem is that if I have everything on my roof I wont fit in

These two things, a fumoto, the Toyota aluminum oil filter housing, and cutting a hole in your skid plate for filter access helps a lot too. Certainly not mess free but pretty close.

Yeah I saw that. Ordering now.
It already has the aluminum housing but I need to order another. The PO replaced it but got one without the metal center filter that goes inside the paper filter. Its 3 internal pieces one of which is a spring and is a PIA to deal with.
    Probably!

What I would do is buy a plastic one and then swap over the tube, because you’re supposed to do that anyways. The aluminum one has too short of a tube and you’re supposed to steal the longer one from your factory plastic one.

If you take that center tube out, you just fucked up the bypass valve, even if you reinstall it...oil will either bypass the filter always/too soon or not soon enough.

exactly. My previous filter was smashed to shit. Was no point in having one in there. And yesterday was to late when I found out to do anything but toss a new one in and start my shopping to fix all this.

Just get the composite one and drain cap...torque it only to spec and life is good.

IMO, there is exactly zero benefit to the aluminum housing...

Benefit I've found is that it doesn't get itself stupid tight from heat cycles like the plastic one does, assuming that's what's happening, I don't actually know. But I have found the plastic one to be much tighter come oil change time versus the aluminum one. Plus there is nice peace of mind knowing I'll be able to remove the housing and change the filter without cracking the damn thing.

No ugga dugga on my truck. And there shouldn't be on anyone else's either.

    Get a torque wrench.
