Bending the cage is such a PITA. My current cheapo is gonna be thrashed soon enough, I have a late 90s Shimano in the parts bin that is solid aluminum rather than a two piece stamped cage, should hold up to anything I'm likely to do to it.

Nothing wrong at all. Bikes are like anything else - cars, guns, tools - you can spend just about an infinite amount of money if you care to do so, but a perfectly decent bike, especially used, does not have to cost a fortune. I picked up a beautiful hardtail, used, with serviceable hardware for about $200 and have been upgrading the hardware a piece at a time with mid tier stuff - $70-75 for new calipers and discs, $25 for a friction shifter, probably $70 all in to rebuild the BB and new crankset/1x chainwheel.

    It's 90% the rider/driver/craftsman, not the gear.

Discs are nice. A basic Shimano caliper and rotor might run you $35-$45 per end. Cheaper than that is not gonna be worth it, dollars to miles wise.

Make sure your wheels are set up for the disc and you have fork/frame mounts integral already or that's an additional expense.

160mm is standard. If you do a lot of downhill you might want 180mm, same disc mount pattern and calipers but you'll need a caliper mount spacer.

Yeah I have the release lever but it doesn't open it up enough, still a wrestling match to get it on and off. If I only needed to do it once or twice it wouldn't be a big deal but I use a fork mount on the bed rail to move the bike. When I'm solo I can chuck it in the bed, but when I'm riding with my wife we need to break them down and use the fork mounts.

Oh, I'm going to switch bikes. I have a giant contend 3 right now. The ONLY thing I want to change on it is pulling the wheel. I have 28s on there right now, which is reallllly not helping. My wife runs (I think) 25s, those drop in and out like a greased pig hunting a twinky. Might even try some 23's. Mine only have about 650 miles on them though, so seems a waste to chuck 'em in the bin now.

I would just find a road bike with discs from the factory and then sell mine. My frame isn't set up for discs, I COULD do just the front, but even that would need a new fork too. Otherwise I really like the bike, so I'm in no rush/not willing to compromise on a cheaper/"not great" fit just for the discs.

It looks like the 2022 MY can take disc brakes, but I have the 2020.
    https://www.giant-bicycles.com/md/contend-3-2020

This isn't me but I've seen a ton of pictures of fork failures from chinesium "disc brake conversion" kits.

Oh, nah, it's a dual pivot style. Road bikes use that from the 80s :D

    https://www.cyclechat.net/threads/h...im-on-a-dual-pivot-caliper-brake-work.157261/

But even "open" it still grabs the wheel (inflated). I don't want to go through the shenanigans of inflating the tire every time I want to take the wheel off.

I was doing that with the F4 since I had to drive a few miles to get to the state park where I've been riding. I found a decent hitch mount bike rack on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07G5VLMN1?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details for about $50.00. Actually In think I paid a bit less than it's listed for today. I used it a couple of times when we were in SC at my son's house. I keep the ancient Specialized down there in case I get a chance to ride. I used it to transport the bike to the park there a couple of times. It also made a decent improvised work stand when I cleaned and lubricated the chain, cassette and sprockets.

I used to use a fork mount on my Tundra, but with the tonneau on the Tacoma that isn't the best option.

I believe there’s an experimental forest near gale we can drive up and there’s a vista at the end last I heard so worst case it may be that. Crawford notch area has piqued my interest in a few spots but I think the memory bank will have to get jogged

another selfish ask: anyone got any lakes to recommend for fishing up in that area?

I was going to say Lake Umbagog but that's over 2 hours from you.

Have you ever been to LL Cote? If not it would be worth the hour plus drive to Errol

what do you have? i looked at crutchfield and get overwhelmed with the options. i don't really care about anything other than carplay. still want to use my backup camera, and steering wheel controls

i like a volume knob but it seems like that adds a bit to the price

Just look for a multi-media receiver. Then you'll want to add the more expensive install kit and you can even have them wire it for you so it's plug and play.

I'd recommend Sony or Kenwood head units personally
