Does anyone know the proper torque spec for the Gen 2 U-bolts? The torque spec sheet that I found on here shows 37 which seems to low. I have also seen 52, 85, 73, 100 scattered over the web. Thanks in advance for any help.

It's 100% 52 ft/lbs the 37 was a typo if I recall, so you are correct to be questioning it.

I do 60 personally to err on the side of tight on the stretch bolts.

I’ve read wear the 37 was a backwards typo also. Could you please confirm wear you found the 52 ft lb on Gen 2? Where I saw this was on a Gen 3. I know a lot of this stuff crosses over but I want to be certain. I also watched a mechanic change a set on a Gen 2 and he just used an impact on it. I know that’s not right. Thanks

There's no official record, all 2nd gens 2005-2015 show 37ft lbs, and even the leaf spring recall instructions show 37ft lbs and it was released years later.

3rd gen is the exact same hardware and spring, shows 52 ft/lbs which is more inline with proper torque specs.

Tundras are 74 ft lbs, but not a direct match to the tacoma like the 3rd gen is.

I did 73. No issues. Even 52 seems pretty light for a u-bolt application.

With the 1st gen taco having a sepc of 90 ftlbs.... I have always torqued to at least 75 assuming the 37 was a typo. 37 is way too light and imo so is 52ftlbs for such a big bolt in that application.

I ran into the same problem when I put 3rd Gen leafs on a 2nd Gen. I didnt think 37 ft lbs was correct either. I went down the Tacomaworld rabbit hole of conflicting information to try and get the correct info. So I checked the 3rd Gen service manual and it gets confusing. In the master torque list for a 4WD it shows the same 37 ft lbs for the u-bolts, but the 2WD shows 52 ft lbs. However, if you check the section on how to install the u-bolts it says 52 ft lbs, and it doesnt specify 2WD or 4WD. I finally went ahead and torqued the 3rd gen FSM. I attached the torque info from the 3rd gen service manual.

    37 just doesn’t seem right.
I actually asked the tech at Toyota what the real spec was when they did my TSB springs.
He said, “We just run them down with the air gun”.

Which is a lot more than 37……….

Torque is determined by bolt size and thread pitch. Not what someone else is doing or what a manual says.
My 9/16 (7/8) get cranked to 90 minimum.
IMO torquing ubolts to the same as your wheels is a good rule of thumb.
That being said my tire guy has the wheels at 110.
