Where are you at on the sand? We talking desert, Daytona or hatteras? I drive down to hatteras twice a year. Air down to 15-20psi, fully disable traction control 4hi 1st or 2nd gear and the only time you'll run into trouble and may need 4lo would be way up in the northern beaches where you have to traverse dunes. I can't imagine sand being much softer than hatteras in the summer. You can youtube oregon inlet idiots if you want to learn what not to do.

Take a compressor, build a manifold to air up/down faster, a shovel, recovery/kinetic rope/snatch strap and some traction boards if you want but most cases if you are aired down your extra gear will be to help the people that didn't bother air down, know how traction control works or shift into 4wd.

If you are driving fast on sand then yeah, 4hi is fine. I was referring to soft sand and slow speeds.

I use 4hi for running sand washes in my manual 1st Gen no problem, just have to keep your speed/momentum up.

Why does everyone have such an issue with reverse? My wife who has only driven a standard a hand full of times can reverse without burning the clutch

On flat or mildly-sloped ground? Sure she can. On anything past around 15º slope angle or so, she can't. Nobody can unless they're in 4LO. (Or are running the 2LO mod.) Reverse gear is ridiculously tall in the 6MT.

When I first clicked it, in the small preview window it looks a little like someone scratching their chin, i.e. wonder/questioning.

Saw that it was "jerkoff" after it showed up slightly larger when inserted in-line; edited the post.

When I do that my wife checks her seat belt and tests the chicken handles to make sure they're still attached.

I eagerly await this post. Yea you can get a running start and get up the hill but reversing up a steep hill, while starting on the hill, is tough in MT tacos. Talking a steep hill, not a slight incline. Definitely a clutch burner. 2lo mod is easily the best mod in my truck.

Yeah, 4LO is my choice for just about everything offroad because of the extra control, and you can cruise along plenty fast if you need to in higher gears still, truck seems fine even up to 30+ MPH. 4HI only gets used in the snow driving around town/on the highway in the winter.

I agree. Anytime I take the Taco to Hatteras, I'm running 4hi. Either way, 4hi or 4lo, if you air down properly you really shouldn't have issues. At least in my experience.

Found one hill in Hocking Hills I could have used this advice for this past spring. Stalled, climbed it in 2wd with minimal slippage when I first got rolling again. Had to rev a little and let the clutch out without bogging. Followed the manual's advice of using the parking brake to get moving and avoided the 3 pedals, 2 feet deal.

Not sure it would have went into 4wd with the incline, but it was my fault, lost wheelspeed going up. Rolled through everywhere else just fine. First manual I've owned, still learning how to handle different terrain/situations.
