Just noticed this thread. Last spring I had the ABS light come on and it was very stiff trying to put the auto into gear. Had a new PRNL switch installed( it`s on the passenger side of the transmission) and everything works perfectly again. Have had no problems since installation. My truck is a 2013 regular cab 4x4. Part number was 84540-35050. Total cost of parts and installation was 434.00. It actually looked like it might be an easy and straight forward replacement but I had the dealer do it as I am just mechanically adept enough to be dangerous. Right before installation I crawled under the truck and sprayed the old one with some PB Blaster and it actually loosened up and the code went out. I figured this wouldn`t last long so I just had it replaced.

I think I found the problem:
One of the wires leading into the female wire connector to the PN Position Switch was corroded and just "popped" off while I was jiggling it. I will attempt to do wire repair tomorrow and report back.

Replacing everything worn, broken, and rusted.
Glad you got it fixed. FWIW @gearcruncher nailed it in post #69.

"Either the new PN switch is faulty or the wiring going to the nuetral circuit is faulty."

    Solid work guys.

I have a 2007 Tacoma and recently It stuck and 3rd gear and would not go into 4th or overdrive. Has anyone else had this issue?

But only has happened once today and now is working fine?

    Thanks!

    2015 Tacoma 4x4 w/tow
As the Beatles said: "Well here's another clue for you all..".. Got home a few weeks ago after an 8000 mile travel trailer towing trip. Everything went well, kept it in 4th 98% of the time. After we got home and settled back in I took the Tacoma down to the car wash to give her a well-deserved bath. As part of the wash I propped the hood and gave the engine compartment a very quick and very gentle wash to get the dust off. No power spray, no soap, maybe 15 seconds. Started up and drove home fine.

The next day my wife took it on a shopping trip and after the second or third stop it started shifting hard, had trouble engaging in gears, check engine and trac lights came on. When she got home I put the reader on and the P0705 code came up. Hmmm..... I parked it outside with the hood up to try and dry out any remaining moisture, but it something seemed strange. So I crawled underneath with a can of WD40 and sprayed around the PN Position Switch AND on the other side of the tranny I sprayed all the joints along the gear selector rod and mechanism. We live in salt country and things can get rusty underneath.

Let it set for a few hours and when I started it up it shifted like greased lightning, but the lights were still on. I took it for a drive and had to stop, shut it off, and restart 3-4 times and finally the lights went out and all was well. Been fine for over a week now.

At first I thought that maybe I had got moisture into the connector by the footwell but that didn't make sense with the sudden hard shifting. I can see why the PN switch can get confused with the hard shifting- it could easily sense that two gears were engaged at the same time as you try and drag the shifter across gears. So not sure exactly what happened and what cured it, but my sense is that the linkage started to bind up, the WD40 cured that, and the switch was happy once again after that. Who knows, but 1/16 of a can of WD40 was a cheap and quick fix in this case. Good luck!

I too had to close off the firewall "boot". Then disconnected the battery and next removed the kickplate and took each plug out 1 at a time and sprayed with contact cleaner. Worked each one of them in and out a few times. Reconnected battery and Check Engine Light still on. (Sigh) Drove about 20 miles to an appointment and on the way back the check engine light went off! Living in Texas, need to get an inspection every year. My first stop was to get an inspection (which you can't pass with a check engine light on.....) State computers have gotten pretty smart and the "tech" can no longer certify the light is "off".... Anyway - 2 weeks since and light still off - I'm good for about 12 months anyway. Thanks to everyone in the forum for helping solve this p0705....

Is this the male side of the plug that clips into the PRNDL switch? Got my switch off; the fun has just begun. 2 pins from the switch broke off inside the male plug and are corroded to the contacts. Can’t get them out

    Yes sir .
This kit fixes the external harness .
There is also a wiring harness for the PRNDL switch that fits inside the transmission .
If I was in your shoes , buy a new switch and the external harness
Make sure your battery posts are removed when you do the job .
Once everything is back together , put the battery posts back on , then check for codes again

Here is the post that I wished I would've read first. I am Jet engine mechanic for the Air Force but this had me stumped for a few days. The lack of info was excruciating.
    1. 2008 Toyota Tacoma TRD Automatic I found out that 2005-2015 all have very similar issues with this. So don't let the year make/model scare you.
Problem- Tried to start my Truck and looked down the shifter would not go into park or move to any gear at all. I immediately popped the hood and saw that my negative terminal was loose( but this has absolutely nothing to with the issue at all.) I could move the shifter but it was very loose feeling. I should've checked the tiny white mechanical arm in the middle console that attaches to the shifter itself but they say hindsight is 20/20.
    Here is what actually happened.
    2. Ran Diagnostic got the P0705 code.
    3. Looked at every forum online and this site. Got great information and did everything that they said. Checked Fuses, Starter Relays, (even changed a few realays.) IGN1 Fuses....all that jazz. didnt' fix it.
    4. Got the truck into neutral by some fluke and was able to start it in neutral from a video I saw on YouTube. This gave me hope but it also kind misdirected me for a bit. Thank God for AC though! Kept Troubleshooting and narrowed it down to the Neutral Safety Switch or (Transmission Range Sensor A Circuit (PRNDL input) depending on what site you are looking at. or so i thought...
    5. Replaced Neutral Safety Switch. Did not fix it.
    6. Even cleaned Kick panel Harness under left Driver side dashboard with contact cleaner. Did not fix it. Some have had luck with this.....but not this guy.
    7. Was informed by all the mechanics that it may be my brake switch but my brake lights were working so I eliminated that.
    8. Was told by an Auto mechanic that it was my Gear shifter whole assembly with an electrical issue, so I called around town to every store to see if they had that part. Nobody has it and they all say to buy one on EBAY.
    9. I go to buy one on EBAY but i wanted to look and see if missed ANYTHING before I spent any more money.
    10. Called NAPA to see if they might have while looking one last time at things i may have missed. While on the phone with them I figured it out.
    11. ANSWER!!! I should have checked the center console gear shifter because under it where I could barely see it, the little white mechanical just slips over a peg looking thing and that is what shifts your Trucks gears. It just slipped off and apparently this happens quite often because of the design. The dealerships are making a killing by charging 2400 for a simple design flaw and telling people they need to replace things they shouldn't. Should've trusted my gut on it being something simple but maybe i can save a few people headaches with my experience.

I just had my shifter housing off today to adjust the emergency brake . Those mechanical cables stretch over years of use .
I should have popped a bunch of pictures . Golly
Is there a chance you can pop a picture of the little white mechanical thing ?
This would really help people with the same problem
