Lights recommendation for Alaska driving

Hi There,

I live in the Yukon, which is close to Alaska, same road conditions in the winter. Snowstorm, moose, wild horses, no fog here.

My Taco does not have any fog light yet, and I am now wondering what is the best option to lit up the road, mostly to :
1- improve visibility in snow storm (happens very often)
2- avoid moose (less often)

I've gathered that a yellow fog light is the one to have for snow storm, led bar to see far enough on the road. Maybe a curved light bar that I can mount as shown on picture. I'd like to choose one or the other to keep costs low ...

So far I've been happy wit my Baja Designs im running, I think S8 light bar driving/flood combo with white lens think might switch to yellow lens & put Brighter white behind grill. My buddy has yellow squadron sport Fogs on his Tundra & there pretty impressive. & another option that im gonna do before winter (that's right around corner) is get a set of Ditch lights they mount were your hood hinge is. Haven't decided what I'm gonna go wit yet..

 

I run BD squadron sports and BD S1’s. Both work great ~ selective yellow for both but also run a white / clear

 

lights above the hoodline reflect off the hood and glare back into your eyes
a bar in the lower grill area is probably a better choice

The S1 as Ditch lights?

 

Auxbeam lights are way cheaper and will get the job done just as well. Mine survived four winters down to -50°F with no issues. You can get a mount for a 20” light bar in the lower bumper opening or pods in the fog light location or ditch light hood mounts.

 

I went with DD SAE fogs for the blowy foggy winters we get Northern VT and have been extremely satisfied with them. They don't ice up at all and the color cuts nicely through fog and windblown snow.

I'll be adding a couple of S1s as corner lights once I decide exactly how I want to cut my bumper for them.

Paint your hood a dark and deep flat black. Eliminates glare

 

I’d recommend getting spendy with it and buying a replacement steel bumper of your choice with plenty of mount options for fog and driving lights

I run Diode Dynamics pro fogs, a 20" baja designs lightbar and ditch lights. The fogs are the smartest and most effective light mod I've done.

I highly recommend yellow/amber ... it improves depth perception and reduces glare for both oncoming drivers in case of the fogs, and back at you.

 

Alright, thanks a lot for all you recommendations, I'll have to think about it now. I keep the lights below hoodline for sure, and yellow'ish

Because I do not have fog lights yet I went ahead and checked if my taco is pre-wired, but I am still unsure. I definitively do have wires in from, a 15A fuse is installed in the fuse box, wires are hiding behind the dash on driver's side, do you have any idea ?!

Hey @Bossert, I would personally recommend the Squadron SAE in amber for the fog light location. This is going to perform very well in those harsh conditions while still providing a road legal choice for you. Because you don't have current fog lights you can purchase the universal set as well as the Tacoma fog light bezel kit and run these lights off your truck's battery. If you are after even more lighting SDHQ makes a super cool behind-the-grill light bar mount for these trucks that will fit a 30" light bar. multimeter continuity test pin 2 of the relay to the switch to confirm the correct one

 

Those pigtails look to be for foglights. Toyota does that usually. Cheaper to just make one wire harness and tape up whats not needed

 

Diode Dynamics SSC3 Pro or Max will melt snow. I have the Pros as they have a more up light that is handy for spotting bambi's mom lurking on the roadside, but the Max has a more defined beam that is easier to properly aim.

I have DD SSC3 Pro in 4K with a clear driving lens as aux high beams mounted on a BAMF rack behind the grill. The aux high beam are wired to the the high beam and independently so I can turn them on or off as well. I also have SSC3's in 4K selective yellow as fogs.
