timing belt replacement /timing belt broke/cam sprocket question

my timing belt broke while driving, at least it was near the house when it happened. I've replaced the belt,Water pump tensioner,etc. ,once before back in 2009 under regular scheduled maintenance and when the belt was intact so the crank and both cams where in alignment, so i am familiar with the routine. this time,i did have to rotate the crank, so i do have my crank at TDC @ 0 for timing, all the crank sprocket marks are good...even stuck a rod into the #1 cyl to see if the piston was at TDC. Question is, this time since the belt broke is all it takes is to align the cam sprocket marks with the V on the back plate? does the cam sprockets need a 180 degree turn to check for...?, do i need to take the valve covers off and check lobe locations markings or something? i did watch timmys youtube about the timing belt replacement but it was all under normal scheduled maintenance and nothing was said about, oh, this is the procedure if the belt breaks... unless i miss that part somewhere.

50 50 chance you have it timed correct.

I always double check with the valves.

There might be an easier way but I always used this method.

Search for lost timing belt change .

thanks, i did a search "lost timing belt change" i didnt seem to come up with anything, i plugged in a few different things but nothing. i know i am not the only one who has probably asked that question, but i'll keep chugging along.

IdK... maybe i'm dreaming but if the #1 cyl. piston is TDC that means the I/E valves should be closed(for combustion to take effect)... so would that mean if the cam sprocket notch "bounces freely" while turning to the back plate V notch and they line up, that would mean there is no load on the lobe and the lobe would be at 12 oclock, therefore it would be correct? sorry, IDK,,,just brainfarting. but best would be check the FSM. if anyone one has that section, i'd greatly appreciate it.

Looks like your best bet to be certain will be to remove valve covers and look for the dots to be aligned on the cam gears themselves. See 2nd photo. The FSM makes no mention of a situation like you're in(at least not that I could find). Semper Fi and good luck brother!

 

You're only out of timing if the belt is on and you goof something up. With no belt on there is no timing happening. Simply line up all your marks on your crank and cams and it will be in time unless something goes sideways on your belt install. No 1 cylinder will always be at TDC when the crank mark is lined up with its corresponding mark without a belt.

AISIN TKT-025 Engine Timing Belt Kit with Water Pump and the belts off Amazon last weekend and it took a few days... it was dayme hot....so worked on it during the evenings when i had time. ArizonaBrian, yes sir! you are 100% correct, i lined up the cam timing marks, then i did a 180degree rotation, then a 360..all counterclockwise, i even did it in counterclockwise rotation. and each and every time the twin cam dots lined up every time. I've have/ had Coronas, Celicas, trucks and this Tacoma, ranging from 1973-2004. and have never came across one that wasnt easy to work on and built so simply that major breakage is unheard of. by just changing the oil when its due adds to the life tremendously . thanks for all the help guys!

 

FOLLOW UP: So far so good, running as normal. forgot to mention while i was disassembling, the reason i think my belt broke may have been cause the belt tensioner bearing locked up and didnt spin... noticed it when removing. Or (dont scold me lol) the belt had about 150k on it.

 

i think i spoke to soon, might be different issue now. just came home and had the CEL come on so... my code scanner read it as p0171 system too lean (bank 1)... O2 sensor i think, but thats strange cause i changed it less than 75,000 miles ago i think ,and also P0450.... EVAP EMMISSION.... maybe the gas cap is loose...i doubt it though. well, this might be another thread so.........
