My timing belt broke.....How do I set my timing?

I have an 02 Tacoma with a 3.4l V6. My timing belt broke and I am trying to figure out how to get my timing right when I put the new belt on. Here is my plan: set both cams and the camshaft to the timing indicators, then put on my belt and rotate the crankshaft twice. If all the indicators are still line up then I will consider everything good. If they don't line up then I will remove the belt, set the cams back to their indicators and then rotate the crankshaft once and line it back up with it's indicator. Then rotate twice again and see if everything lines up. Is this the correct process or am I missing something?

That's a great video and actually watched it for help while taking everything apart. But in my case with a broke belt I'm in a different situation as far as timing because I am not in time right now.

Change the water pump, idler pulley and tensioner pulley while your there. You'll regret not doing it later

Didn't open the PDF mechanicjon attached but just line the cam marks back up with the mark on the rear timing cover and put the crank on 0*.
    Exactly it.

    Damn right.

The belt also has lines on it that help time it.

My truck has 213k miles on it. And I bought a kit that has the water pump idler and tensioner.

What you described is exactly right.

It makes no difference if the belt you buy has marks on it or not.

No it doesn't have to have marks
But its another way to confirm your timing it correctly.

The belt lines help account for a new belt "seating", same reasoning behind accessory belts having two tension specs. One for new and one for used, used being in use for 5 minutes or more. Pay special attention to the vid starting at 8:53 if you want the job done correctly.

I agree with the above with one caveat. Make certain your #1 piston is at top dead center on compression. Just because your crank pulley is on the timing mark DOES NOT MEAN the engine pistons are in the correct position. Not to be a naysayer, but are you certain that broken belt did not cause any engine damage?

Cancel what I just said. The belt broke thus the piston position will be correct with the timing mark on "0" period. I wasn't thinking.

I'm putting the water pump on now. The old water pump had a groove all the way around the pump but the new one I got doesn't. The gasket I got is just a regular paper gasket ( not rubber or metal). Do I need to put some rtv sealant on this or not?

as a friendly reminder... the jiggle valve on the thermosat goes on the bottom... in a previous post of mine I noted that mine was installed incorrectly but TW member point out where I was wrong, live and learn.

    OME and worth every penny.
AND remember after you're through and spinning everything around checking marks and worrying (just kidding, I know you just want it right) the painted marks on the belt are NOT going to line up again.....they would eventually.....but not for many revolutions.
After that first roll over you're only going off of the timing marks of crank/block and cam dots.

That made my head hurt the first time I used a belt with marks built in. It's only for showing how many cogs apart each component is when correct.
