Looking at the poll, it looks like those that chose # 3 are winner, winner, chicken dinner!

I don't get worked up about the yellowish color. When it leans towards red in color, it's time to get rid of it.

Does the engine not have a filter before the carb?

I'm not sold it's the fault of the can. I am interested in the results.

I'm glad your neighbor has carb rebuilding experience.

Ooooh, a great suggestion. Once my mowing season is over (any time now I suspect), and I try to jack up the front end of my ZT to check for/remove caked on grass under the mower deck, I will try to remember to apply a very liberal dose of Fluid Film to the underside of the deck :)

@koditten since you're the Kohler man.....

My other Hustler has been throwing a fit the past couple months. Can mow 10, 20, maybe 30 minutes with it and it starts starving for fuel. I know it's not spark related because you can choke it and get it back to the shop.

I started out changing the fuel filter from the local hardware store and an Amazon fuel pump, I threw the pump in the trash and got a genuine Kohler one from a friend who works on welders and is a Kohler dealer.

I took the bottom of the carb off and drained it thinking it had water in it.

I took the carb off and took the plunger out of the bottom thinking it was letting it not get fuel.

In the last year I've replaced the valve that switches between tanks and replaced all the fuel lines and pulse line to the pump.

Cole got it out yesterday and mowed 2/3rds of the yard and it started skipping then would run about half throttle so he parked it and finished with his old John Deere 110.

Do I need to rebuild the carb again (did it a couple years ago). It has that little pump on the side of it with the tiny piece of fuel line.

It baffles me how it'll run fine for a little bit and then start acting up, I thought it was the coil(s) until I pulled the choke out and it keeps running.

    That does sound like carboration.

I had one doing something similar. Would run great for a while than just fall on its face.

I picked up a carb from Amazon. Night and day. It just purred with a new carb.

I used to rebuild the carbs, but the time involved made it not worth it.

You have the carb with accelerator pump on the side, so it's a little bit more money, but I like those better because it helps them start very quick.

Yes they are, I have one on our 4 wheeler and a chainsaw. Like Kirk said, cheaper to buy the whole carb instead of fooling with them.

True. It was very frustrating when I would source a kit, only to find the carb had unrepairable internal corrosion.

    Just easier to swap carbs.

man i love my Hustler mowers. im not even on one right now, but would go back to them in a heartbeat if they would put the EFI 40hp BS on them like my ZXT has.

Hustlers were good to me for 20yrs.

I acquired a 2nd one a couple weeks ago, traded a welding job for it. Guy said the engine was locked up, I put the battery charger on it and cranked it. Mowed the yard with it a few times and the governor came lose, it runs away now. Checked the outside spring and it's fine, I got to open it up and fix it. This one is 60" and has the vacuum system with it.

@koditten how do I figure out what I have here, the decal is gone with the numbers. I know it’s a CV something. When I got the 1st Hustler the man gave it to me, he said he didn't know anything about it. I have the starter and carb somewhere. I may rebuild it and put it on the other mower if I can figure out what it is.

They used to stamp them in the valve covers, before they went to plastic valve covers and a decal with the numbers.
