I have all the symptoms of a failing TPS. I am told by Toyota that I can’t buy a TPS alone, I have to buy the entire throttle body.
    1) Can someone confirm this is true? I’ve read that the 2004 model has a four pin TPS. Still not sure why a TPS can’t be bought separately.
    2) Does a new throttle body need any calibration/adjustment by a mechanic or is it a plug and play installation?

    Appreciate any insight

    Thanks 04TRDV6,
I checked that part and was told at first it will fit my truck using year, model and trim. However, when using my VIN he said it was not available for my VIN number. It almost seems they changed something midstream during the 2004 year model when it comes to the TPS

Looks like 89452-35030 might be what you're looking for...
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/throttle-position-sensor-89452-35030.566731/page-2

    https://www.yotashop.com/tps-sensor...hrottle-position-sensor-2000-2004-tps4-35030/

    Or, the Aisan alternative number
    https://www.partsgeek.com/catalog/2004/toyota/tacoma/fuel_injection/throttle_position_sensor.html

From what I read in that thread linked there is some calibration required. Lot of reading there - with links to other threads with more reading.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
Show us a picture if you have the drive by wire throttle linkage .

You need the complete throttle body.

Last I heard the repair of your TPS has not been sorted out yet.

Bivouac, appreciate your input. So 04TRDV6 has convinced me to try the TPS replacement. I talked to the Yota Shop and I was told this sensor will work however it isn’t a OEM part. I’m rolling the dice and hope this works. To be continued….

Once I get it installed and run it for a bit, I’ll give an update. ✌

For $50 vs $500 I'd have to give it a try too. Searching for the info was not entirely selfless. ;) I don't have this issue but if/when I do I'd like to know if this part works as advertised so please do update us.

Just ordered it today. Going on vacation now so I’m hoping it is here when I get back. Provided I don’t have any installation problems, I’ll run it for a couple of weeks and report back

Installed new TPS today. Took a 15 minute test drive. No problems so far. I’ll post again at the end of the week when I have more drive time on it. Attached photo of the new TPS. $50 from Yota Shop

Did you just plug and play it? Or did you repin anything?

I have an 04 3.4 and bought this same unit years ago (when the original thread started). Just to have it on hand in case this issue arose for me.

It was a direct fit. I took the throttle body off and took a picture of the the old TPS. Then simply removed it and installed the new TPS. No adjustment……….yet. I need to drive it more to verify

This fixed the problem. I removed the throttle body to make it easier to remove and install the TPS. Also cleaned the throttle body too. Took a picture before I removed it. I put the new TPS in the same position as the old TPS. That was all. Fairly simple. Saved $500

It seems something changed mid-stream in 2004 to me too. I've got a 2004 3.4L automatic that's been having this engine-not-responding-to-accellerator-gas-pedal problem every now and then for over a year. Last year I bought a TPS (throttle position sensor) from an auto parts store whose computer said it was compatible with my truck and it didn't fit. It had 3 pins while mine has 4 pins After taking mine off and putting it back on, the problem didn't happen again for months, so I'd hoped it was just gone, but nope.

I just took a look and with a camera, you don't even have to take anything off. You can see the 4 pins of mine from the passenger side in the attached image.

[EDIT: corrected post to say I have the 4-pin, not the 3-pin TPS]
