The FOB is always broadcasting a radio signal whether it’s in your house or pocket.

I believe the fob signal can be shut off.

My truck is either at work where I can see it or locked up in garage if I’m not in it.

^^This. If they really want it they are going to get it one way or another. All you can do is deter easier methods so hopefully they move on to a softer target.

They don't even need your FOB. There is another method where they access the network wiring and confuse the security system with signal overload and then steal the car. I have not heard about it on a Tacoma but on some Toyota’s it is through the headlamp, and BMW's it is through a hole punched into the driver's door. Anywhere the CAN network is easy to access.

Build a better security system and you just build a better thief!

The Rav4's are being "hacked" through the headlight. Have seen a lot of guys in Canada, reporting their Rav was stollen, and later found with he driver fender liner cut open and headlight wiring damaged.

You can make your own key holder. I used a simple metal candy box. It did not work great "as is" but I lined it with foil and it works well. You test it by holding the key near the door while in the box and make sure the proximity feature stops working. Note this is not for my Toyota (no prox key), but for the wife's Crosstrek.

Anybody wants my truck that bad they can have it. I’m not saying this can’t happen, but there’s so many other things in the world to worry about and this one is so far down the list.

Use a faraday bag for your key fobs and have good insurance.

If you have a manual transmission, then you can deter would-be thieves with your personality.

Have had 2 trucks stolen. 2nd was my fault completely.
1st one stolen from my driveway:annoyed:, 07 dclb, paid 29,500 for it. Btw, there were 5 other tacomas on my block and a Ferrari. Yet they took my truck. Jackasses got caught 6 months later, highway patrol followed it back to a warehouse that had 6 other Tacomas and other vehicles that were also stolen.
    Insurance pay out was 21,000:eek::D:smokertransformer:
10 years I had the truck and it was a workhorse. :hattip:
Now I own a 17, still a workhorse and was stolen also ( from a job site and i left the keys on the floorboard:anonymous::spending::ballchain:. Just worth half of what I paid for it:rolleyes::(:angrygirl:

Every night when I lock the truck, I hit the lock button and hold it down while hitting the unlock button twice... fob flashes 4 times and the remote stops sending a signal. Can't open the door by touching the handle on driver's side (push to start vehicle) because the fob isn't emitting any signal. You have to hit the unlock button to wake the fob up and unlock the door. Hitting any button will wake it up. The second fob is in the house but is also "shut down" and not emitting. Keeps people from reading and scanning the signal from outside the house.

I went through this a few years ago with our 2017 4Runner. Thieves were stealing the fob signal from the Tacoma in the garage and trying to use it to boost the 4Runner in the driveway. Only problem the 2017 4Runner was keyed ignition. Ended up pulling the fuel pump and starter fuses, adding a pedal jack and steering wheel club, ect.

They stole a neighbors car instead. The entire street has security cameras now and we fully support the 2nd. Did I mention I was moving?

I always turn my fob off and place them in a RFID pouch.

You can make one or buy them for cheap. I even stick my garage door remote or any RFID remotes in there too.
