60+ year old thread.

LOL, I started developing my first cataract when I was 50; my (then) ophthalmologist told me the same thing, "Relax, your eyes are still seeing better than 20/20, it'll be years before we need to do anything."

Yeah, about that, my vision kept deteriorating so I complained again in six months and then six months after that, and always got the same answer, "Yeah, you've lost a little vision, but you are years from needing surgery." I waited another year and a half and when I was absolutely sure she'd agree something needed to be done, I went back; she started off with a lecture, "You first came to me with 20/15 vision, then 20/20, then 20/30, by now it is probably only 20/40; I'd kill to have eyes as good as yours." She started the exam and got really quiet, then finally said, "Dude, over the last eighteen months your eye has fallen off a cliff, you are now legally blind in your right eye."

While it was good to get confirmation, the bad news was this was about 2010 and my wife and I had both lost our jobs, and healthcare, during the recession, and when she told me my eye was so bad it was going to cost $16,000 for the surgery, I started looking further afield. At the time I was working as a contractor doing a conversion from a legacy system to a somewhat more modern platform (a platform they already heavily utilized), and one of my co-contractors said, "Why don't you go to India, they have clinics where all of their doctors are trained in the U.S. and all of their equipment and supplies are from here as well."

Good idea, I called a clinic in Mumbai and told them my story; based upon airfare, lodgings, and stuffing my face full of as much curry as I could get my hands on, I figured the entire trip, surgery included, would only cost $6,700. Another co-contractor said, "Before you go, call this clinic, they're only a few miles north of where you live, the guy who runs it does a lot of deals for uninsured folks who cannot afford to pay full freight." I called that clinic and talked with the surgeon's assistant, she relayed my story to the surgeon and came back and told me the doctor would match the cost of going to India.

By the time my second eye went when I was about 55 (and had insurance again), guess who I went to for the surgery.

 

I'm sure everyone has weekend plans depending on their expected weather. We are going to have a beautiful weekend.

I'm going to be home, playing in my shop, trying to get my '78 Chevy chassis ready to be shortened from 131.5 inches to 112... so I can put my M37 body on it. Getting very close. I think it will happen Monday, fingers crossed. Can't wait to start mounting the body on the truck.

 

I work Saturday but will find some time to get into my woodshop.

 

I'm a Vietnam Veteran. Glad he is finally home. Wish I could be there to say goodbye. May he RIP.

No deer, but when I got home my neighbor was picking Po pinkies in my yard and donated some to me, looks like I'll be making mushroom omelet for supper.

I'm also glad to see any of the MIA vets found and returned to their home soil, not a great outcome, but at least the family has closure and the vet will have a proper burial which he well deserves, may you RIP Capt. Hall.

 

Thanks Kurt. The eye doctor told me it's no big deal but, anything can happen. We'll see how it goes.

Thanks for posing this Ken. I read the story and thought of all those that are still MIA and glad that we were able to bring home Capt. Hall. May he RIP now that he is back home.

I had the capsulotomy done to my right eye a couple of years after cataract surgery and it was a quick and painless treatment. Certainly a lot less uncomfortable than having the edges of my torn retina laser "welded" back in place. Not that the laser hurt because there aren't any pain receptors at the back of the eye, but the opthalmologist shoving his thumb and forefinger into my eye socket to manipulate my eye for a better aim was kinda distressing.

The good news is that once the capsulotomy is done it's fixed; it won't come back. Not like my retina that had to be welded again a few years after the first one .

I am having this procedure to both of my eyes, one eye at a time. The date is the last Wednesday in October and the first Wednesday in November. If this does not fix the entire problem then it could mean I need to outer eye covering polished, and that will be a painful procedure. I believe the name of the process is called Anterior Capsule Polish.

I live this dream every day.

Good Morning. I am going to start to make my own hot sauce this year. I have quite a few peppers that will be picked in the garden today. This will be a fun month-long process.

Question: Has anyone tried to improve your penmanship at a later age? I would be interested in how that worked out for you. I am going to purchase this book to see if it helps me write better.

Good morning all and happy Friday!

 

Had that done in both eyes . Takes about 2 minutes .There was no prep for mine It’s the capsule you’re born with in the eye where they put the artificial lens . Clouds up . I had a vitrectomy in my left and just straight up laser repair in the right eye . I’m lucky I can see with my left . Slight double vision for ever but you just learn to deal with it . I had 10 tears in my left retina and 3 in the right originally and cataracts were the side effect of my surgery.
