Dust cap

I can’t get this f****** dust cap off for anything. I have beat on it with a screwdriver and a chisel for hours and it hasn’t budged. Soaked with pb blaster and nothing. Need to replace bearings. Any suggestions?

 

Ive been there with a screwdriver before - then I got a really sharp chisel and it came right off.

Could try a little heat on the hub.

However if its that bad, you could just punch a screwdriver or something through it and plan to replace it.

 

Need to hit right between the cap and the hub. Looks like you been hitting both the cap and hub at the same time.

Work your way around the entire thing with a chisel to get started and then a large screw driver if needed to twist / pry it out

 

Chisel in groove and pry it off. Here is a pic so lots of edge to pry out.

 

Thanks. Once I got the rotor off, it came off fairly easily. Now on to the axle nut.

 

Situations like this, I’ve had success using this type of chisel. Put the flat side on the more stationary part, the wedge shape side on the part to be removed.

So I got the bearing assembly off. I had purchased new seals, but it looks pretty good to me. The bearings seem fine also, but I was getting a lot of noise from passenger side and the truck has about 150k miles, so I thought why not. What do you guys think about the seal?

 

When seals get out of focus, it's best to replace them

 

Your already in there, might as well replace a $5 part with 150K miles on it.

 

For future reference, a wood chisel works GREAT.
It has a thinner “sharper” edge and doesn’t booger up the edge as bad a standard cold chisel.

 

I did end up using a wood chisel. Bearings and seals have been replaced. The noise has gone away. Planning on doing the other side when my brake pads need replacing. Have been on vacation this week. Replaced fluids in front and rear differential, along with transfer case and flushed and filled radiator. Off to Keeneland tomorrow to win some money. Thanks for the help!
