Yes… then if your cores get clogged with the debris that a missing filter isn’t catching…you will also have reduced air flow…filters are a lot easier and cheaper to replace than pulling the dash to clean other components

I'm not concerned about the cost, but I also don't think see the point in wasting money on something that isnt necessary. That's exactly why I'm asking if it's necessary to protect the heater core or evaporator.

 

You do know that opening the window doesn't disable the heating & cooling system, don't you? The two are not mutually exclusive. Some of us enjoy driving around with heat on the feet, while letting a nice cool breeze through the cabin.

 

Do you have central heating and air in your house…

Exactly what I was wondering. So it is necessary beyond simply protecting the cabin air quality.

Yes. It's good at that.

Just pull it out and vaccum every 6 months or so. Or buy cheapos on Amazon. Or make your own from washable filter material.

I understand the 'heat on windows down' comment. Did that a lot in a convertible.

 

I'm old enough to remember when there was no such thing as a cabin air filter. Not sure how all of the components survived back then.

My old 1970's Dodge Dart had a hinged door under the dash to let fresh air in. All kinds of debris used to blow in through it - leaves, small twigs. dead bugs etc.

 

So do I, but I won't remove that filter... it's a line of defense against further problems. I haven't changed my filter in 3 years.

For sure. Just like the filter in your home furnace. Protects blower and coils, despite what the marketing bullshit on the box says about “removing 99% of contaminates” “helps you breathe better” ETC..

 

bigger openings. these days, tolerances are tighter. it means there's a better interaction between the air and the coils to better transfer the heat/cold to the air, but bad because it's easier to screw up.

 

In life it is always better to have protection even if you feel it is not needed (trucks, human body etc.). Remember, accidents can make babies

 

My dad's 1980 Chevy pickup that I learned to drive in had those floor vents. I wish vehicles still came with them. I loved them! The triangular smoker's windows were great for letting in a breeze, too.

My 2009 Tacoma is the only other vehicle I've had that had a cabin air filter, and many people in this group were were removing them completely back then. If I recall correctly, the earlier second gens didn't even have one.

That's exactly why I'm asking. Modern components are very different from their older counterparts. I'm not familiar enough with modern vehicles to know if it's strictly necessary. All I know is that in nearly 30 years of driving, only one of my previous 8 vehicles has ever had a cabin air filter.

 

Why not just leave the dirty one in instead of replacing it, then?

 

Why are you worried about airflow if your windows are open?

Won't follow good advice, so do what you want and figure it out from there. You asked a question and have been given solid advice. Btw, my 07... early 2nd Gen and it had a cabin filter.... but you do you bro. I am done with this. Remove it or don't, I don't really care. People will be People.
