Started a year ago doing a frame swap and I pulled the transfer case and then the transmission. When I did this I loosened too many bolts and broke the seal on the part in the pic. I also put in a new flywheel, pressure plate, clutch, throw-out bearing, fork, slave cylinder. About 2 months ago I finally redid the seals on the transmission and had to separate the housing. I have it all bolted back together and finally in the truck. I can push the truck back and forth like is in neutral, the clutch works as I can see the slave cylinder pushing the fork but I cannot move the shift rod at all -- its just stuck in one location -- no left/right or up/down.

I can put it in 4h/4l/2h and push it around - nothing locking up.

When I redid the seals, it was on a bench and I just slid the housing apart and slid it back. can that have misaligned something ?

I have not started the truck yet and not sure if I should. If I get it started and disengage the clutch can I damage anything in the transmission? anything else I can try?

I don't know these transmissions at all but it almost sounds like the transfer case is in neutral and transmission shift lever is not situated in the gates of the shift forks

Ill go out now and see if can get the transfer case in gear -- I need to look up "gates of the shift forks" -- if that is the problem how do I fix it?

I don't know what exactly you'd be looking for but if you remove your shifter you should probably see a rectangular gap that a knob on the end of your shifter should be able to sit in and allow the left and right movement in neutral.

Remove the shifter and take a picture down the hole then cover it up so nothing falls inside

So provided then that the shifter doesn't move you may have to pull the shifter base too to check and see. It's possible a gear or two got engaged and/or the fork isn't lined up to the collar and therefore locking everything up

it is possible to knock things out of alignment by just separating the case and bolting back together?

Yes, could of been any of a few things.

The end that is circled is where your stick is.

Basically what i'm thinking is on the other end of that something isn't in the right place.

Can we have more info like what engine, transmission, 4wd or 2wd and what your process was for the reseal.

honestly this is probably gonna end in you doing the job again. Make sure before reinstallation you drop the stick in and make sure you have all your gears before installing back into the vehicle next time.

its a 4wd, 6 cylinder -- took off the bell housing, throw-out, clutch fork, pulled the bearing retainer front cover, then two sets of retainer clips, one retains the bearing and one holds on the housing. that allowed me to slide the housing off. I put the red gasket stuff on and closed it back up. I only have one picture when I pulled it off.

Looking at the picture it appears what looks like 3rd gear is engaged based on the hub position and the shift rail position, did you toss it back in with everything in that position?

Detents hold the transmission in the selected gear . Interlocks prevent 2 gears at the same time .
Its going to be tricky to get the trans back into nuetral without taking the transmission back apart .
Did you run it through the gears before you put the transmission into the truck ?
Did the input shaft turn ?
You can try to remove as many detents as possible from the outside of the transmission .

I believe it went back into the truck the same way, I did not run through gears before putting back in and I don't remember checking input shaft. I don't know what Im doing with transmissions -- it sounds like it would be easier if I pulled it. how would I remove detents from outside, maybe try that first and if its a no-go then take it out.

In your picture , you can visually see where the transmission is stuck in third gear .
Those 3 rails all have to be aligned to grab nuetral .
The issue with this transmission is that most of the tiny interlocks are internal .
A lot of transmissions have a bolt you can remove from the outside of the transmission to gain access to the interlocks .
Your problem currently is the interlock system . The transmission thinks you are stuck in 2 gears at the same time
You can try pulling the transfer case off and then the rear extension housing off the rear of the transmission to expose the interlocks .
I think thats the only way you are going to find neutral again .

Once you get the transmission back into nuetral , put your shifter into the shifter pocket and run through all the gears to verify you have all the gears before you re-assemble everything , Then once everything is assembled , run through each gear with the shifter before you start the truck

I have a W59 overhaul manual listed at the bottom of the first post

Different trans but you can scroll down and see where the interlocks are . Super difficult to mess with the interlocks when the trans is in the truck .
