During this year's deer hunting season, I have found a new interest in wild mushrooms. I love eating mushrooms but I wouldn't dare eat any of these I've found in the woods since I know nothing about them. But I do find them intriguing.

Any mushroom connoisseur out there that can identify these mushrooms? These mushrooms were found northern California.

    3. Not sure if #3 & #4 are the same, #4 looks like a rotten version of #3.

    4. These are interesting because if you bump or step on one it releases a green powder out of the top. I made sure to stay away incase it was poisonous.

3 and 4 are probably puffballs. Certain ones are good to eat while they are young. Last ones look like maybe inky caps. I love mushroom hunting, we have morels here in Utah in the spring that are super tasty! And we have boletes, chanterelles, and oyster mushrooms that are good as well. There are some great books out there to help ID mushrooms.

Also, don’t eat anything unless it has been cooked, and then only if you are absolutely sure what kind it is. There are a lot of “lookalike” mushrooms out there.

My identification skills are not confident enough to eat anything I find except morels, they're so distinctive. I have recently gotten interested in growing them though. I'm starting with lions mane, a relatively easy place to start and an awesome mushroom

Yeah there’s only a small handful that I would feel comfortable eating, the rest I usually just take pictures of. Here are some I’ve found recently.

In the fall, the most productive mushroom place is my own yard, with various kinds of boletes. I don't know any English names of them, but I eat them (and I'm still alive)

I’m a morel hunter and chicken of the woods when I see them. I see some people in southern PA have been finding morels the past couple weeks. I may venture out later this week if we get some rain.

I don’t remember the name but that top one is bad juju. Some say the Vikings boiled them in a tea before battle. Supposedly the reason for the super human strength and no sense of pain.

Yeah, I think it is an amanita muscaria. Definitely didn’t eat that one.

I don’t think we’ll be seeing any morels here in Utah for a little while, it snowed today in the valley.

I only hunt and eat morels, I have tried 3-4 other kinds but didn’t like them.

The morels are done here. I was always told to pinch the stems and leave the stumps in the ground.
