Glad to hear it went smooth. If that set ever makes it my way again I'll cut down the install tool at work. I realized when I went to do mine that it doesn't leave room to swing a hammer.

 

Toyota is bringing back the Pre-Runner trim on the 4th gen. That would be right up Tim's alley.

 

I'm sure it's just what @Supr4Lo mentioned about water getting in. Who knows when the nipple cracked and let stuff in to what's supposed to be a sealed unit. Currently yelling at screws so I'll be a little late and not in a Toyota

 

I’m only now starting to emotionally recover from having to say no to that LS460, now I’m having to wrestle latent subconscious desires for a Tacoma??? I’m already perfectly happy in my current relationship with my 4runner (saying that out loud with the garage door open so the 4runner “overhears” me).

 

It worked good.
Being that the install tool gets inserted 'in to' the ecgs, vs. 'on to' the surface, makes for a nice even entry.
Read about freezing the ecgs before hand, will shrink it some for an easier install.
It was already cold enough outside, that wasn't necessary.

 

Are those a tapered square drive? Or a JIS that rounded out?

 

Took a little to get back on this project but I think we're in the clear. It was definitely water and mud that got in through the broken nipple. Just have to clean up the rust and moisture, apply dielectric grease and cross my fingers.


Think I have a solution to the crappy plastic. Found a binding post I can dremel the top off from and drill a hole on the screw side to keep the ventilation function. Then I can hook up the venting hose to that. The hose seemed short so I went with a 1 inch post. I'll measure tomorrow and cut it down if I have to. The extra length will be nice for a hose clamp though to make sure the hose doesn't slip off.

What's nice is I can be confident it won't break again. Just have to get some silicone to plug up around the post as well. If I have to get a replacement I'm replacing the nipple with the post and hose clamp no matter what.

My only hesitancy would be the squeaky OME leaf springs I keep reading about.
Almost pulled the trigger on a cheaper OME kit but the front/rear lift ratio wasn't what I wanted so I decided just to pc the lift together.

When the time comes (spring hopefully) new UCA's and front shocks are next. SPC's seem to be a favorite and I'm looking at the Fox 2.5 factory series.
Rear springs I'm thinking the Icon RXT's will suit my needs.

Skid took a good hit and kept a good chunk of Tigerton dirt up there.

Oil change is all done. Stupid actuator motor was shot so I moved on to something I could actually complete for some ego redemption. Have a new one coming in tomorrow. If that doesn't work I'm giving in and buying a whole new part

After ecgs install came the front diff. draining of the, temporary, 80w-90 and in with some

$30 75w-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75w-90 gl5 synthetic.

 

For what it's worth, that 80w90 would have been just fine even though 75w90 is specified. Heck, ECGS tries to push 85w140 dino oil so there's that. Toyota likely specifies lighter weights for CAFE ratings. Just like anything else, key is doing it on schedule or earlier if you run in severe operating conditions.

GL5 is fine in the diffs, there is no debate there. GL4 is possibly better in your 3rd gen T-case since it has yellow metals but any modern GL5 would also probably be fine too. Lots of FUD surrounding this topic, don't sweat it.

 

I was using the 80W-90 like a flush, more or less.
That 40k drain was pretty dirty.

If I start sweating, these days, I just slow down.
