You could fabricate a mount for the license plate and for a backup camera. I'd place both towards the top of the bed, as you just might actually test your departure angle.

 

I agree with this line of thought. Higher up is better because I could see dropping off a ledge and your plate getting crinkled up again like before.

Heres an idea: Hard mount your backup camera somewhere it won’t get smashed and then call that part done. Make a hitch mount adapter for the license plate. Then, on the top of the flatbed make some kind of small receiver mount so that when you hit the trails you can take it out of the low position and put it up high. Also, if you make the bed-mounted receiver removable you can still rock a completely flat bed when you need to have it. Modular mounting on the bed top could also be used for things like a vise which I’m sure you’d use for the bikes or other projects.

Edit: went back and re-read your post. Received mount isn’t “letter of the law” but I highly doubt any cop is that big of a dickhead to cite you for it.

I would opine that from the places you have been and the stories you have to share that it's been a good life. Heck I haven't done 1/8 of that stuff and I'm financially no better off.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BBLHB274?ie=UTF8&th=1. I wasn't happy with how easily they moved, so I used a punch to dimple the hinges in a couple of spots to firm them up a little. You could put them just about anywhere on the down panel with a small LED light above to provide legality. When you're on the trails, a quick push would put the plate out of harm's way. A piece of 1/8" aluminum is what I used to back up the plate.

Or, you could bend up a piece of sheet metal for a mount that could be bolted or welded on.

 

Thanks for all the license plate mount input. The wife even got involved. Still no legal solution that I embrace... guess i am gonna have to be an adult... Do want to through out that i am building a headache rack-can it go up high? Didn't read anything about height, just horizontal and lit. Hummmmmm....

 

I was looking at the legality of tinted l.p. covers, recently.
All I found on the dmv page was "legible and visible".
Tinted covers are most likely a no go.
Height probably doesn't matter.
Best bet is stop at your local law enforcement agency and ask. Their the ones that'll be pulling you over if it's not right.

 

I have two potential options for mounting, but first cut the plate down as small as possible. leave just the actual number and registration sticker. Option 1 next to the receiver with a heavy plate behind to keep the plate from being bent up. Lose a touch of departure angle but being so close to the spring hangers maybe it's not such an issue. Option 2 would be to cut a small box into the center angle section to mount the plate and reverse camera..

 

Hadn't thought of boxing into the storage area... would work and only loose storage. Hummmmm.....

 

I'd like to change my vote to Jonathan's idea, and also propose another option. Mount on the lower bumper, bend the top of the plate at the line under "WISCONSIN" to match angle of angled box section (or cut the plate to fit). Here's a quick photoshop:

I like the recessed box rite above the bumper or hinged rite below the camera.

 

and it would be a nicely shielded place for the license plate light.

 

I had to take a picture of my bass rig on Saturday.

At one time, I had 2 Ampeg 4×10 cabinets, but I sold them in a moment of stupidity. When the band got back together, I bought a Peavey Black Widow 15" speaker from Uncle Bob's on Greenfield, and threw together a box for it. Later, I bought another one, and have been through a handful of different designs, including 2 different versions where both were in the same cabinet.

I eventually decided to stop winging it, and use the specs to find the ideal volume, port size, and tuning frequency. I wound up building these two boxes, with 6" × 6" slot ports on the rear. The bottom one also has locking casters on it.

I'm always impressed when I play through them and remember how well they turned out. I'd gladly put them against any store bought 15" bass cabinet, and I bet they would hold their own.



The bottom one still needs the grill painted. But, anyone here who knows me already knows how I like to get a project 90% done and then just call it a day.

Still, I'm pretty proud of what I did with these.

 

These different license plates ideas are fun. But keep in mind.... I bet Leo's don't like plates that are chopped up.

I started out with a GK head, which I still have. I ran through that with an ADA MB1 preamp, which was endorsed by Les Claypool, so I had to have it. I actually wish it hadn't crapped out, because it was pretty awesome. Eventually, I added a Behringer power amp, and had everything in an 8 space rack, which weighed a ton!

One day, I told my ex that I was sick of lugging it around and we needed to put some money aside for a new head.

I had already chosen that MarkBass head. About a month after that conversation, on the way to the studio to record some stuff, we stopped at Guitar Center for drum sticks and guitar strings, and I saw that it was on sale for like $100 off. So, I called the misses to run it up the flagpole, and shockingly she said to get it.

What impressed me right away was how much cleaner it is than the old Behringer power amp I was using before. Much more powerful, even though it was rated at lower output (800 measley watts compared to 1200). I definitely learned the difference between quality electronics and cheap junk.

I also love that it has a little pencil tube preamp which adds a little warmth, but it also has a solid state preamp with a blend control.

Sorry for the rant. Sometimes I forget how much I like that stuff.
