If you routinely only haul 1 bike and don’t want to store something that takes up a lot of room… this thing is perfect. I stick it in the cubby behind the rear seat when not in use and it only takes about 1 minute to put it on and take it off once you get familiar with it.

Is it pricey… YES (if not on sale)
Is it incredibly well built… also YES

I dig it! Probably a stupid question but what/how do you stabilize the bike in the bed.
I know there are many ways to include straps, I’m just always looking for more efficient ways of doing things.

 

Good question! It does fine just sitting there if it is all strapped in since there is the bar strap and the two frame straps, but I also use this since I have it in my garage anyways. Doesn’t move an inch with it back there.

You really don’t “need” anything to stabilize the rear wheel. I own a RaceFace tailgate pad and a 1UpUSA hitch rack. I still end up simply using a towel or moving blanket tossed over the tailgate and nothing else 50% of the time. Absolutely no issues to note.

There's just something about the Surly bikes that I really like. They're heavy as all hell, not sure I'd ever actually own one, but they look cool.

 

I've had the Ice Cream Truck for 3 years. Yes, it's heavy...around 36 lbs. I think of it as my "winter trainer." It is an absolute hoot to cruise around on in the snow and the weight has never really bothered me.

 

I was out on my Surly Pugsley yesterday, thing's 10+ years old, heavy as hell but still a blast. Fun having a bike you can just do whatever with and not care too much about the bike. Especially when it starts snowing in the middle of the ride

 

the minimalist one has always liked those. Does it keep the wheel off the tailgate? Seems like the wheel might rest & rub against the tailgate with so little coverage?

 

it does not touch the tailgate. It comes with a strap that holds the bars sideways in place. I ride 2x times a week away from home and have not had as much as a smudge on my tailgate.

 

So its like a thong, and a full size is a big diaper.

I use this one for about an hour and a half of ride time through trails every Wed night. Works great and a good price point. Bonus… comes w a taillight too.

I just purchased the Outbound Lighting set. They work great, a bit pricey but I have used them several times now and no issues.
