Some companies like Jeep used to actually cover this. An entire harness got eaten away in my father’s 13’ wrangler Sahara. Popped up with like 15 engine codes for misfires and timing issues. The main harness under the engine got devoured by rodents. Replaced for free under their warranty. Not sure if Toyota does this.

Will this soy based wire insulation class action lawsuit thing ever go away? They use to cry about this same damn thing on a BMW forum I visited. Is it true and is this stuff like crack cocaine to a mouse? I have no fucking idea and honestly have no desire to find out.

But I bet if it is all true (i.e. Toyota has been using wires with insulation known to attract mice) there would be lawyers eating their own trying to get a slice of this class action business! Last time I stayed up for an all night bender, all the late night lawyer commercials were for injuries and asbestos exposure. Not a peep out soy wire?

Definitely set some traps. Put peppermint oil on some rags under the hood. Or use a repellant spray.if you park in a garage try to seal up the ways they are getting in. Everyone has mice issues on the winter. I had 2 I caught so far the winter in the kitchen.

I park outside and it's never been an issue with my vehicles. We have some outside cats that live around the neighborhood thanks to people who got evicted and put their pets out. One of them a black cat hangs out in my shed near the truck. He seems to do a job hunting so I don't mind him being around.

Ooh…and while you’re here, did you ever end up joining an off-road club? I know you were trying in summer but the local chapter of the Lockeratti was playing hard to get.

I have two of the Loraffe battery powered rodent repellers zip tied under the hood of my ‘Taco. Also have a third one hard wired to the battery. I also have put whole bags of mothballs as well as peppermint oil soaked cotton balls, and have sprayed the firewall insulation with Tomcat mouse repellent. Ultimately, the mice will get used to these attempts to deter them. I’ve recently undercoated my frame/suspension with Fluid Film and that normally helps.

I do park outside against a wood line and that’s where the mice originate from. Recently deployed poison bait traps and there is evidence that the mice are nibbling on it. Jaws traps will be deployed next around the front wheels with peanut butter.

Protecting the engine compartment is going a full time thing. I have to replace my anti-knock wiring harness this spring; little mouse bastards have almost gnawed it to the point where it will cease working.

I'm working trough this myself and feel your pain. I bought peppermint bags off Amz, sprayed peppermint oit around engine, used bounce sheets, and they are still going strong. Have air rifle locked and loaded. I have the dreaded P0328 code now.

Yours look pretty fierce tho.... sticky traps, snap traps, peppermint bags, oil, and do the cabin air mod and air box mod too

    Just heard that on NPR.

Good point! owls and hawks- our friends- are susceptible to strychnine poisoning from the food they eat, and if poison pellets are just illegally thrown around outside of any protective containers (like the tubes they use for ground squirrel bait), other birds and mammals may eat them. I have seen a hawk waiting outside of a ground squirrel bait tube for a squirrel to come out of it- that hawk probably didn’t do too well.

Had this happen years ago to my garaged 2000 T4R. Trapped the mice, sealed the bottom of the garage door. Fixed!

Wow they chewed a hole through the intake tube. Thats nuts. For now just wrap a bunch of electrical tape around the hole and all good.

And not trying to step on toes, but arent all the plastics made out of ABS? Could be wrong there.

Also, if you park in a garage, get a big cat maybe. With rats like that you may not have to feed him

Yeah, but those links are trash. The TW threads you linked to are just someone saying it is soy wiring that are the issue, and the other linked site is someone selling underbody coatings. I take issue with the claim that “It’s definitely a factory issue because of a soy based product.” You don’t definitely know that. You just know people on the internet say that. (I know, I know, I “can’t fix Mr. Internet.”)

And my in-laws have had rodents chew through their third gen wiring and nest in the air box and cabin filter spaces at least three times. It’s disgusting. But the truck is parked outside. And they rarely drive it. And they keep doing the wrong things to fix the issue. And you know what, they had rodents chew through the wiring and nest in their previous vehicle that had zero soy wiring. Because it was left outside. And they have rodents around.

I live in an area that is surrounded by chaparral hills, filled with all sorts of critters. My neighbor had his Mazda cx3 chewed thru by rodents and warned me not to park my truck on this particular side of the street that has a thick bush overhanging the side walk. The rodents and squirrels like to hide out in there and sneak into the vehicles that park adjacent to them. I’ve checked under my hood to see if there’s any evidence of mice or squirrel and have found foot prints but luckily no droppings or chewed lines. At least from what i can see. I bought a peppermint oil deterrent spray off Amazon and use it around once a month to spray under the hood, and around my tires when i park. So far it seems to work. I also got one of those bakery powered ultra sonic devices that are supposed to deter mice and it seems to work for the garage, no evidence of furry creatures, no droppings etc.
