That's the official recommended method. A lot of people say that you don't have to pull the plenum, but I just couldn't see how my fat fingers would manipulate the driver's side coils without breaking something. I'd rather just pull it and have room to manipulate the insulation and wiring harness to my heart's desire.

It's just the engine with the upper plastic intake removed. Looks worse than it really is..

There was a thread about this like 3 days ago, but I’ll reiterate. I was quoted $1200 by the dealer. The $309 labor is a great quote, just take him the parts haha.

but I did the swap myself, there are some really good YouTube videos you can watch. You don’t have to take much out to do this job even though the manual says to.

If you want to do the job yourself get a swivel spark plug socket for like $16 on Amazon and have some other extensions ready. Buy OEM plugs. It will probably take 1-2 hours.

Around $100 for oem plugs. Changed them myself for free. You don't need to remove the intake.

Passenger side is pretty easy. You could do those yourself and pay someone to do the three on the drivers side if you really wanted. It's not hard. I highly recommend trying to change them yourself. Several YouTube videos and pictures online.

This is what I got to do my plugs @80, best investment so far. And with several different extensions and a lot of patience. Drivers side is doable just take your time and all I ended up removing was a bracket. 1000000240.jpg

OK then, I take back my nice comments about Toyota bean counters. Fuck them. I mean, come on. Spark plugs are a wear item that will need to be replaced several times over the life of the engine. I can think of several reasons why Toyota would allow a design that blocks something that needs access. However, none of them have anything to do with the long term happiness of the customer and everything to do with milking money out of their pocket at the stealership's shop. Yeah, I know EvERyBoDy does the same thing, but that doesn't make it right.

Just added toolbox and roof-rack to haul my fishing boat 100's of miles into the backwoods every week. Goodrich K02s, Bilstein 5100 front and back, no lift.
Its not too bad of a job. I am retired with 3 years work disability for severe neck and back injuries, daily pain and monthly doctor visits and endless treatments. Most recent CT scan shows 3 herniated discs, and a deteriorating thoracic and cervical spine.

Thirty years of that crap, and I still got it done. Nice to still tinker. :)

Only trick are the ones on driver side. There are a few videos online that detail some of that. Watch those first.

I just did it this weekend. There really is only one really hard one to get out (without taking off a bunch of shit) and that's the front spark plug at the front if the engine on the driver side. After that, everything else is progressively easier. I am not mechanically inclined. Took me two hours because I'm retarded.

After that plug, the hardest thing for me was taking off the clips. Take your time, start on the hardest part first and once you get that done, it's all down hill. Watch that video, he goes over it really well.

Spark plugs cost me $84 and shipping was kinda expensive, so it will be about $100. What that guy was charging was some BS.

You guys have it easy … this same engine is horizontally mounted in our 18 RX350, with the head for cylinders 1-3-5 inches from the firewall. We have the same 60K plug replacement ‘requirement’. That is to meet the emissions warranty on relevant components. Once 10yr/100K (whichever occurs first) arrives, I’m going to 100K plug changes. This engine was also in our 07 ES350 and plug replacement is 120K.

Don't do my own maintenance, so I had my local mechanic do it with the inspection first week in Feb...120.00 for OEM plugs, 200.00 labor. 2016 with 62,000 mi.
I was ok with that right or wrong...

I’ve worked on aircraft for over 35 years. Engineers don’t care about the guy who has to service the aircraft or the truck.
