Stumbled across this thread researching tractors, anyone have experience or can lend some first hand experience with old Ford 8n tractors? Recently bought 5 acres and have been debating what options I have to maintain it. Don't have 30k+ to drop on a new or even lightly used compact tractor but an 8n was suggested to me as a sub 5k option since it has PTO.

Mainly looking at brush hog, snow blade, and probably a tiller at some point. flat property overgrown with weeds and a few saplings. plan is to build on it but leave most of it pretty rough until I utilize the land. Been doing some reading on the 8n's and perusing facebook market place. seems to be a lot of 8n's and jubilees out there for under $4k in running conditions.

8N's and Jubilee's are decent tractors for the money. One thing is they don't have live PTO meaning you need an overrun clutch for a bush hog. If you don't have one, when you push the clutch in to stop the tractor, the bush hog will continue to push the tractor until it stops rotating. It simply slides on the PTO at the tractor then your bush hog shaft goes on it.

I have read about the PTO back feed. most were people saying they figured that out by clutching and still running into a tree or a fence. So this is essentially a PTO clutch to stop overrun? thats pretty neat.

Yes, it allows the bush hog to free spin but the tractor to stop

I’m a big fan of my 9N for lane plowing and property maintenance. It’s been stupid reliable and I only paid $3600 with a loader, rear blade, and 60” finish mower from Derek at Vice Grip Garage. Sold the finish mower and got a 60” box blade for dirt work and grading the gravel lane/drive. Sure, a newer diesel with power steering and 4wd would be nice but this thing still does it all for me. Overall one of my best investments I’ve ever made!

    65 gave you great input.

8ns are great old tractors. Many of us started out with them. Easy to work on ^& parts are not that hard to get. They don't have a lot of power but for 5acres of flat? Easy work for a good 8n.

I have been keeping an eye out for one with a bucket cause that would round out most of my wants from a tractor but bucket attached ones are harder to come by in the radius I am looking. Most are sub $3k and ones with implements range from 3k-7k depending on how many implements they come with. (7k one has a bush hog, snow blade, 1 bottom plow, and a disk).

for the price, reliability, and versatility its looking like a better option than an ATV with attachments. Also much cheaper than a modern alternative.

I run on my tractor for the wood shipper and stump grinder to save the PTO clutch when the implement spools down. works as advertised

Took the B7100 out and started removing the old hog pen footers yesterday. Going to finish up maybe next week. I think I will try to crush so I can bury most of the rock used.
Working on cleaning up the old barn area and planting grass and keeping part for burning brush.

I have the hookup with a dump trailer now! Going to pickup some gravel with it tomorrow. Time to break out the shovels and rakes :annoyed:

is it 1 owner? service receipts? id check google for prices then consider the supply/demand for it. i would go that route. i do not know tractors. but i do know trying to get a reasonable deal. i overpaid for a 17 year old atv but got just what i wanted for example.

It's good for most things at a small farm or landscaping biz. Right at 6k lbs. Pretty much identical to my Yanmar vio25. Same motor & all. This one just says Cat on it. :)

Fella on here last week was just looking for a good buy on a tractor......
