Not enough equations but you're on the right track.

Not that it really matters but since it's a big deal around here, here's what we have going on:

    https://www.valleynewslive.com/2024...lion-ndsu-college-engineering/?outputType=amp

A building is being demolished, a new one is being built, two are being combined into one and getting an addition and two others are being renamed.

    Numbers-wise, it's an absolute mess.

    Unfortunately that's not an option.

Guy came by yesterday with a small pulley and ask if we could bore it and rekey it for an alternator. I said sure, what size. He said I’ll bring the alternator so you can measure it. It’s 12” long, shaft is 1 3/16”, and it’s 420 amps. Goes on a fire truck :bananadead:

I guess being an EE is even a better trade than I imagined...

Imagine having 25M to donate and still a few dollars to live on. :humble:

Being a state school and everything that entails as far as funding, I'm surprised the building letter job isn't subcontracted out and subject to Davis-Bacon wages. Disregard I guess DB work is all federal funding.

First day of union negotiations at a stalemate, they'll reconvene tomorrow and try it again.

the University I used to work at just got a $180 million donation for a new sporting complex including a hockey arena, football stadium, and baseball/softball stuff as well. meanwhile facilities (where I used to work) just got a whopping 3% raise, a negotiation that went 6 months past the contract end date. I keep telling the guys I used to work with to put a hockey jersey on the work vans, maybe somebody will accidentally throw money at them.

I have an issue with the power wire leading to my barn. The tan line out of the bottom of the box goes to the darn. The other wires are the power in from the main panel and out to the A/C unit. I know this can’t be to code, but it has always been this way since I bought the place. The line is very tight and has cut through the insulation and is grounding out on the box. The line is buried all the way to the barn about a 100’ away. Does anyone have a suggestion on how fix this on the cheap?

Well... You have some issues there. o_O

An easy solution would be to move the entire box down a bit to give some new wire to work with on the barn cable. I'm not saying it is a great or correct way to do it but it should work.

It looks like they ran a proper 4 conductor cable to the barn but the AC circuit is only a 3 wire without a neutral. This is fine for the AC unit as it runs on 240 volts (L1, L2, G) and a neutral isn't needed.

The barn circuit however should be 4 wires with the ground & neutral isolated in the barn panel and run back to the main.

Can you run a new circuit (4 wire) from the main and make the splice in a weatherproof junction box nearby?

Notice how in the illustration below the ground & neutral are bonded together at the main (left) and isolated from each other in the sub-panel (right).
