That warbling whine is loud, obvious, and bad.

Manual trans? Probably TOB. But be 137% sure its not an idler pulley before you go pulling out the trans.

    yes, Manual 6,
It does sound like a serpentine belt idler doesn't it? (has a very similar whine) but it's not that, it's in the back coming out of the transmission casing when running in neutral.
and it goes away when you put the clutch in, you can control the sound it like a switch using the clutch.

The clutch in/out behavior nails it as a clutch/transmission problem, and almost certainly it is TOB (throw-out bearing) whine. That sounds pretty loud, like the TOB is pretty far along the path to failure. (In milder cases it is just a quiet, continuous "chirping" sound.)

There are a lot of older TW threads & various solutions people have tried for this issue over the last 10-15 years.

From what I gather, the CM (Clutchmasters™,) and separately the URD™ (Underdog Rac ing Development) TOB replacement kits are not recommended. Apparently the CM hydraulic cylinder is prone to failure-by-leakage, early, and the URD™ replacement TOB simply wears out too soon.

The current best-of-breed solution, provisionally, appears to be the Tilton™ HRB (hydraulic-release bearing) upgrade.

The following linked thread is best deep-dive technical investigation of the entire problem. This is where the Tilton HRB kit was designed pioneered by some adventurous owner-engineers. Note, read this through carefully to get context and understand the problem, but don't start ordering the many parts scattered throughout this thread:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/6mt-throwout-bearing-and-clutch-system-shenanigans.698464/

Here is a separate thread that came later and is focused more specifically for people who want to acquire and install a complete and up-to-date Tilton HRB kit:

Beautiful work on the updated parts lists & photo how-to at the beginning of that thread.

I last followed that thread closely about a year ago before you had done the extensive clean-ups & edits.

Would you consider putting clear & prominent "Last edited/updated on: XX/XX/XXX" at the top of each edited post? Without those, one assumes they are from ~2020, the original date the thread was started. The only way to know different is to see the tiny little "Last edited: " tags that the forums engine puts in automatically way down at the bottom of each post:

That's a good idea. I have some text in red that says that I'm updating, but, no dates. I'll start doing that.

    Too many to list

I believe I'm having this exact issue with the CM hydraulic cylinder, very slowly losing fluid but can't find a leak, by chance do you have any info on their twin disk clutch? Thinking of upgrading if I have to rip the trans out anyway

I've installed the URD sleeve and TOB on an 6mt FJ with the same trans. I thought it was a great fix. I will do the same when my 6MT tacoma needs it.
