I've done a mod or two
There's a couple baseplates available now to adapt to a Skunk2 or Holley plate.

Spoiler none of them will fit without a body lift or fiberglass hood.

yeah I would prefer one that is more like a 7mgte or 2jzgte style. One that went off to the side and put the TB over the Alternator area.

Kinda would be tough with the oil fill. Also would still be long and couldn't be huge diameter there, it would literally only be good for IC packaging.

Be large enough for the power you can safely make with these engines anyways.

I'd be you could get it to line up so you could still get to the oil fill cap.

Not that it'll happen anyways, no market for it.

But yeah, be the best way to route for a turbo. Look awesome.

The guy making those plates and boring the lowers is making just a hair over 1000hp, all built but still. He has a fabricated intake now for his personal one that sandwiches an intercooler core in...

yeah saw that. But I meant more for the average dude not doing a built block. Too expensive to build the block on these.

Yeah limit is roughly 400hp then, ballparked. But limit goes higher, safer, the less restriction you have in general. I'm content with mine but I could totally see doing one of his intakes on a street truck that doesn't have to think about going to nowhere and back still. Cut the hood, chop the inner fender skirts out and run compounds.

I reckon you're right for a first-timer. I've gotten to play with enough LS swaps for now.

Got the new heads on, new heater hoses got delayed in shipment AGAIN.. probably will just fork out the cash for the absurdly overpriced autozone hoses to get it done while they’re easy to access..
Anyone ever used just regular non-molded hose for heater and IACV lines? Would be much better than paying $35 for a foot of molded line..

Winter 2021 I found a beautiful 1996 XtraCab 4WD 2.7L with less than 150k miles on craigslist for just over $4k. Drove from Quantico VA into Delaware to check her out, and sure enough the frame had some bad rust and the engine couldn't run for more than 30 minutes without overheating, but I was smitten. The owner had only bought it a few months prior and couldn't figure out what was wrong.

I'm not a truck/car guy so I figured at that price this was a good investment to learn more. I bought my 2010 back in 2015 and learned how to do light stuff like oil change and brakes, but I'd never done much in the way of the engine. I figured this 1996 would be a great chance to learn more about cars on a pretty simple vehicle.

Here she is when I brought her home. As you can see, someone had gone through the effort of a new paint job, probably to just pretty it up and sell her. But the paint was just about the only thing nice about her at this point. It took half a day to get home because I had to stop a lot and couldn't really go faster than 45mph. Not a fun trip.

    IMG_2034.jpg

The engine bay was covered in oil and gunk. I couldn't tell what was what. So the first thing I did was a thorough clean. Then I started taking things apart. Didn't really know what I was doing, but after reading through plenty of TW threads I figured I'd replace as much stuff in there as I could. I didn't really photo document this, but I took a lot of small videos to help me remember where stuff went. Here's a pic I took at one point just because I thought it looked neat.

On top of that, I ended up messing with the radiator a lot. I can't find my notes for that and at this point I've forgotten what all I did, but I remember it was a headache and I went to a few mechanics to ask for some advice as well.

When it was all done, she could run like a normal truck which was great! Next was the frame rust. I borrowed a welder and started practicing, and after a few months I decided I was NOT good enough to tackle this on my own. So I took Baby Taco (that's her name at this point) to a shop to have the frame repaired. I also had the shop do the following:

    - KMC Enduros 16x8
    - OME Suspension - A new fuel tank skid plate since the old one was almost rusted gone
    - Replaced my driveshaft center support
I kept the tires she came with and bought a full size spare BFGOODRICH AT T/A KO2 RWL Size: LT26570R16 121S E.

At the same time, I ordered a flat bed from Ute Ltd which showed up while the frame was being repaired. I rented a trailer and took the flat bed to the shop to put it on once the frame was done since the stock bed was already off.

Here's the suspension and new wheels:

    20231030_145528.jpg

    20231030_145830.jpg

And some pics of the work the shop did:

    Hernandez frame 2.jpg

    20231030_145456.jpg

The welding was of course one million times better than anything I would have done. The end result with the flat bed one was pretty sick:

The walls fold down and can be removed:

    IMG_0413.jpg

    IMG_0415.jpg

If you couldn't tell by the pictures, from the time I bought the truck to the time this has all happened it's been a couple years (I was very slow working on the truck in any free time, and then I had to save up a bunch of cash to do the frame repair stuff) and we had moved houses a couple times actually. At our current place I no longer have a garage, so I was unable to do the next step which was raptor line the exterior in white. I don't think white looks as good as black on this truck, but I like the idea of keeping the truck as cool as possible on long excursions so I took her to a local shop to get her raptor lined:

    IMG_6079.jpg

    IMG_6080.jpg

    IMG_6081.jpg

Once that was over it was time to get started on interior stuff. Thankfully I don't need a garage to do most of this, just some nice weather preferably. I really wanted a large touch screen, so I went with a used/refurbished Pioneer 7600NEX that I found for almost 50% off MSRP on Amazon. Since I had everything open I also grabbed a backup camera on Amazon and installed that too. Here's the initial screen install, mainly to make sure things work:

    72574202505__3B6C34CB-E4E9-483D-9E9D-87789613E38B.jpg

But I hated the screen being so low, so I got creative and used a combination of stuff from Bullet Point mounting and RAM to make a solution to get the screen above my air vents. To cover the normal stereo face area I used some black plastic stuff off Amazon and modded a RAM cupholder to screw in to the makeshift faceplate. I'll post some pics of this later since I'm at work and don't have the truck with me, but here's one pic that kind of shows it and also shows my current project:

    IMG_4899.jpg

The cupholder is turned upside down in the pic. And yeah, if you couldn't tell from the picture I'm now going to add Lizard Skin to the interior of the truck. I took out everything and spent the last two days tackling the stock sound deadening stuff, what a PITA. I got it all removed and then spent an afternoon wire brushing all the residue away. I don't have any pics, but I finished yesterday afternoon with some rust reformer on a couple spots and that's drying until tomorrow.

    IMG_4897.jpg

    IMG_4898.jpg

    IMG_4900.jpg

    IMG_4901.jpg
Like I said, I'll post pics of the cleaned up result if my wife sends me some from the house since I'm at work. Pretty stoked so far. After the Lizard Skin I'll add some custom storage behind the seats, and put in some new Corbeau seats. One of the bolts for both seats sheared off during removal, so I'll have to take it in to a shop to get the hole unplugged and re-threaded or I'll just drill through it all and use a bolt with washers, grommets, and nuts. Not sure yet. Curious if anyone has advice on that one, I'm concerned about rusting the nut on and making it impossible to remove later...

Also with the Corbeau seats already here I'm down to give away the stock 60/40 seats. I wanted to post in the selling forum but I don't have enough posts to list something. If anyone is looking for some seats they're yours for the taking...

Wife sent some more pics - new seats, some more shots of the screen, and the cleaned up floor. Black areas are rust reformer. I sprayed it on to a couple rusty spots but also the areas where I sanded through to bare metal and then I read that maybe rust reformer shouldn't go on bare metal....
