Greetings. Haven't had any luck searching this topic so asking here...

Let's say "a buddy of mine" wants to leave work on a Friday around lunch and go camping with some other buds. He knows where he is going and even has the exact dispersed campsite he wants in mind. But, they just stocked the lake and creek nearby with trout the week prior so he is aware of the possibility he won't get that site because it is pretty easy to find and usually occupied on the weekend. He knows some people are coming to hang out who have never been to that area, so he wants to pick a site that is easy to find and get to for people who may not have a truck or much sense in the woods.

So... the Wednesday before, he drives 2 hours to the site, puts up 2 of his own tents, hangs a hammock with tarp setup, sets some of his Walmart-tier coolers and chairs around, stacks some wood up, puts up a couple tarps to hide under in case it rains, goes fishing for an hour or three, then drives 2 hours back home.

Question is... is this guy a hero for spending his day off getting the site staked out and "claimed" a couple days ahead of time, making life easy for his buddies and ensuring everyone has enough space for the weekend, or is this a sneaky tactic not to ever be implemented?

    Asking for a friend.

Pic for fun, not related to the question at all paria.jpg

He left his garbage on public land and if we’re all lucky someone steals it so it doesn’t get blown away.

Leaving your stuff at camp is fine while you go out for the day. Leaving your stuff at camp for multiple days just to hold a spot is a douchebag move.

Yep he’s a total douche bag. Hogging up limited public sites for his own selfish self. I wonder OP is the friend you refer to actually you? Kind of strange first post. Could be wrong but this looks like a one post troll post and he’s out of here.

Sounds like your "buddy" or one of his buddies should probably take Thurs and Fri off of work, set up camp Wed night, and stay a couple of days.

That's a pretty lame move. if you aren't using the land, it should be left open to those who can/will.

It's annoying enough when I go to developed/established campsites and notice they're all booked up online, but less than 1/4 of the sites are actually in use. But the system allows for it, and the sites are paid so it is what it is. Even in that scenario, if someone doesn't check in the first 24hrs, they forfeit the reservation.

In this scenario, it's public land. everyone has as much right to it as everyone else, so no, reserving a spot a couple days in advance is not okay and I wouldn't feel bad at all if said person got all their stuff stolen. If you guys really wanna reserve it, send someone to camp out there for those days as stated above. Otherwise it's a d-bag move.

Just imagine this is the precedent that gets set. People would leave the crap they don't care about at sites all the time to "reserve" it, at best making it impossible for anyone to get a site, at worst polluting the area.

Put yourself in the shoes of someone who took off a Thurs Fri to get away from people for a possible long weekend. Would you be upset to see a bunch of empty sites just being held while they're working at their office in the city?

    True.

If I had a similar question I don't see myself heading to a truck oriented website to ask about it.

Maybe he's over at a Jeep forum asking the same?:rofl:

Does that make it unanimous so far?

Take another day or two off if you want to beat the crowds. Stay there and enjoy the peace and quiet while the other suckers are still at work.

Not ideal either way but at least if someone paid for the site on the day it is technically theirs to use as they see fit; of course, following site rules and whatnot.

Keep in mind peeps the OP is likely a troll. He made this one and only odd post almost 2 weeks ago and has not been back since. Just saying.
