EXACTLY... When they itemize even inflated at $100s for parts, the rest of the estimate is going to look comical. And agreed, that picture even someone not mechanically inclined would know something doesn't look right.

Lol, for 5k I would be willing to take the rest of the week off load up my tools and drive anywhere in the US to swap out some carrier and wheel bearings.

Instead of disassembling the driveshaft and replacing the carrier bearing, the quote appears to be replacing the whole driveshaft assy. Go somewhere else to get the carrier bearing replaced.

Is the wheel bearing replacement for all four? Rear wheel bearings are a bitch. Doing all four takes about two days in a shop.

Sorry all for the late response, my phone died and I just got home from work.

I'm going to ask for an itemized estimate when the shop opens in the AM. They sent me the inspection results and the quote about 30 min before they closed today.

It's unclear from what they've sent me whether it's just the front wheel bearings, or all 4, but I've only noticed noise from the front.

Either way, I'm going to cancel my Tahoe trip this weekend and learn how to use a bearing press instead. I'll probably shop around and get a second opinion on the wheel bearings and some of the other issues this shop claimed to have found.

For those of you offering your assistance, you're the reason I think this is one of the best communities on the internet. I'm located in the Monterey area. I'm definitely willing to compensate in cash/beer/pizza if anyone is willing to lend a hand. @RandyLahey, I would dress up like a Spaniel and kill your neighbors ducks if I thought the truck would last all the way to PA on what's left of the current bearings.

These prices are insane, and I'm not trying to defend this shop, but honestly owning older high-mileage vehicles, and not doing the majority of the work yourself on them, is a losing battle financially in today's day and age of $150+ per hour of labor.

It's probably more sensible to buy new and sell when the warranty expires. But the best option is definitely to get older vehicles cheap, and do all the work yourself

I knew nothing about front suspension (not that I know a lot now, but enough) and was quoted $5k for LCA arms (not bushing replacement) and cheap ass aftermarket coilovers. It gave me motivation enough to learn and get it done myself, around $1700 total WITH a new rack, TRE's, rack bushings, and ball joints. I know you say you don't have tools and/or a place to work, but for that kind of money, you could still come out ahead buying tools and renting/borrowing a place. It's food for thought.

Those quotes look like " I dont want to mess with this " quotes. Go get some other opinions, or go rent some tools from autozone and watch some youtube videos on how to do your CB.

Look for reputable mobile mechanics in your area too. The ones I have around here are fair and will put on parts you provide so no price markup.

Just do carrier bearing for now yourself, if there is still noise then consider wheel bearings.

Is this shop in Beverly Hills? Those prices make the dealership look cheap.

Look for a small indy shop with good reviews; maybe one further out of town with lower overhead.

Bro 2k for a carrier bearing! I did it on my 99 in like 30 minutes lying on my back in the dirt and being extra slow with re tightening everything (case Im a bit OCD about making sure things are snugged properly)

I live in Big Sur but work in Monterey.
PM me and I can get you the tools and walk you through it.
I might even have a set of combination wrenches you can have to start your I own an old ass truck and shit always breaks toolkit

Also in the PM shoot me the shop name and I can recommend some others if you need work done at less than a complete adjustable King suspension lift kit price. some things are just better paying someone to do, but this aint one.

For that price you could buy yourself a nice basic tool kit, parts and still have a lot left over

Get a Spicer 211750-1X, basically an oem part, less than $100.

I agree, find another shop. I understand why you’re irritated, but I’d at least get a second opinion before I got bent out of shape

Even going into another reputable shop and telling them what someone else was trying to charge you may get you some insight if the price is fair/unfair. I deal with clients all the time who tell me what other contractors tell them they need, they figure out if the other guys are shiesters real quick if I agree or disagree with another bid.
