Hi. I think I am going to finally get my hands on a '22 OR. I remember a few years ago there was a whole thread or forum related to ways that people were securing commonly stolen or vandalized items on their truck. Something about securing the gate. Something about how to secure the spare. Etc.

Can someone please point me to that? I spent some time looking around and couldn't find it.

Alternately, suggestions about common things that are stolen and great, hopefully inexpensive, ways to secure/modify?

    Thank you in advance.

Toyota sells a "spare tire lock".

A TW member (@christian06 ) sells something to keep the tailgate from being stolen. I bought a SaBellCo instead of that one, but his does not have any thefts/failures reported, I think.

@RichochetRabbit Thank you for your reply.

Hoping there are less expensive ways to protect cat converter.

Not many. Sheets of aluminum or steel, bolted to the truck to make your truck not worth the effort. Finding replacements can be costly and take time, and some less-enlightened states will make you ground your truck until replacements are installed.

A friend of mine had a Tundra and wrapped his Cats with chicken wire and rebar. He felt a Sawzall would have trouble cutting through the chicken wire. Looked awfully ugly when I looked under his truck.

Correct, anything thats not a 5 second theft and they usually move on. Hose clamp, sobellco, anti theft device, washers are all highly effective deterants.

Remote tailgate lock, GBS, console safe, wheel locks, spare wheel lock, cat protectors, metal skid plate for furl tank, lockable gas cap. Some also have a kill switch hidden somewhere. My dash cam starts recording when someone approaches the vehicle from the front or activities in the car itself. It also senses motion of the car-hence it ran down my battery dring the last stromy night.

i put a hose clamp on the tailgate. it prevents easy removal. if anyone's more dedicated to the cause, they get the tailgate, no different than the wheels on the truck. that's why i carry insurance.

as far as the spare, same thing. i padlocked the extra winch chain to prevent the mechanism from lowering. if they cut the padlock, or chain, they get the spare, just with a little more effort.

Padlock in that dirty and wet area? Asks for a lock that does not open with the key when you need the spare. The OEM spare lock makes more sense here.

i've got a weather-rated padlock for the job. but really, i've got the tools in the truck to break the chain if needed. honestly, if i need the spare, i've got unlimited time to get it down, so i'll find a way. the idea is to prevent grab-n-runs.
