Put the tiller to work on the garden yesterday. I ordered a soil test kit to see what I need to add to get a good garden going.

I tilled up the dirt for our garden today. First time having a garden so no clue how it’s going to turn out. Soil looks super fertile. Do you put up a fence or leave it open? What are you planning on planting?

This is my first time doing a large garden. I ordered this test kit to see what the soil is like, it's not as expensive as I though it would be. I have fencing in the barn I intend to put up once everything is planted. I'm planning to plant tomatoes, corn, peas, potatoes, and whatever else my Aunt wants to put in there. Previously, I've only done a small tomato garden, so this is also a somewhat new experience for me. I would consider myself to have a brown thumb, so this will be interesting to see how well I do.

Based on my recent trips to the grocery store, you'll about to be millionaires if you get half your stuff to grow and take it to a farmers market.

Taters in the ground and onion sets in the garage waiting for another couple of weeks. Then on or after May 15 is when we typically plant everything else that is from starter plant because of frost/freeze.
We are still using veggies from last year's season. Even dehydrated tomatoes.

Not doing any gardening this year.
Last year wife had all this stuff she put out & then she never took care of it & it all fell to me....

Instead she had me plant 6 more fruit trees & 4 bushes. She did help with this & she "says" she will water them. We'll see if they survive. They are in what was always the garden location, the soil is good, so if she waters like she should? Our fruit supplies will be really good in a couple years.

This gives us a new total for the farm credit stuff.

    4 apples
    4 peaches
    4 pears
    4 plums
    4 cherries
    Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, mulberries, persimmon
Shagbark hickory, pignut hickory, black walnut, chestnut

We'll see if that satisfies the new lady in control of the tax breaks for mini farms.

I planted a bunch of Chestnut and persimmon last year for the deer. I'm thinking about adding some apple, cherries, and peach trees for me.

unless you cage the fruit trees the deer will have them. they walk right through our yard and eat anything unprotected. if not that the bucks butcher tree trunks with antlers.

Was recommended by @ACEkraut that I post here

Copy/paste from the Northeast BS thread
Anybody know anything about lawn mowers? Just took ownership of this John Deere 100 series that my dad was told is going to be expensive to fix, apparently a 135? Has an issue with the engine, regardless of throttle or choke position it revs to and stays at redline on startup. Supposedly the governor is the issue. About to start pulling the motor apart…

I've got grow tube tree protectors on mine. Though I did lose one chestnut this winter, likely to a buck in the rut. Knocked the stake completely out of the ground along with the tube and ate the entire tree. :annoyed:

Well I call it a mini farm or hobby farm cause we don't do it for a living.

In my area you have to have a minimum 10acres dedicated to farming to qualify for the farm tax discount.

We have 15acres & 14 of that is listed as the farmage. 1 acre is for the house seat, 3 acres for mowing/hay & 11acres for fruit/berry/nuts/woods.

It doesn't have to be 100% plowed or planted. You just cant do anything else with it than its designated purpose.

Our fruit trees are spread out around the property & our berries are "ringers" around the outskirts of what's mowed.

The nut trees are also spread out for better production. (We didn't plant the nut trees)

Then at the end of the year you have to fill out a tax form & show how much you sold of each thing & what you sold it for. Then they do some figuring & give you a percentage of property tax credit.

That's how it works here in my area, yours may differ.

Deer love those persimmons. I think they nasty!!

BUT once yours start to produce? Let me know & will get you the only good use we found for them:
It's called persimmon pudding. It takes all the tannins out of it & actually is a nice tasting thing then.
Will probably be a couple years before you get enough yield for that.

that still could be a problem. possible intake leak too if it revs way high. i used to spray wd-40 around the intake to find leaks.
