Went on a camping trip with the fam. My little man’s first time. Such fun.

 

I've been doing some cockpit tweaks to lessen wrist pain. My new bar is maybe a bit taller than I’d like, and I want to remove a 5mm steerer spacer. Normally I’d just put the spacer on top, but the steerer is about 1-2mm too long and interferes with the stem/steerer cap.

Any good recs on how to remove just a few mm from the steerer? In the past I’ve just used a pipe cutter for them, but it won’t work for a few mm.

 

With it being such a small cut, can you get a different spacer for the top?

I did think about some sort of clamp/guide around it that I could just file up to. Yeah I could probably figure out a different spacer combo that would work out. That might be the right move. I have a 10mm for the Macride install and used to need another 10 for clearance with the stem when the kid seat is installed. Now that I have a slightly longer stem I might be able to get away with a 5 then put the 10 up top. Or maybe just sneak a 2 in there somewhere.

hmmm. i would just get a tiny spacer. i have this problem with one of my steerers as well. i have a 3mm spacer on it to make up the difference. hahah.

 

You can just get a bunch of different width spacers from Amazon and mix and match until you get the right height. One some bikes, I have about an 1" or so of steerer on top of the stem just in case I need to move the fork from bike to bike.

 

I have a handful of spacer kits, but the 1/2/3mm spacers really come in handy for what you are doing where all you need is a sliver.

Although I think I’ll actually stick with the X2 since it’s only got 100 miles on it. And just use the free money to cover my bike park pass and a couple tanks of gas which means free days riding

 

Ok ok you guys are right. I guess I was making it more complicated than necessary. I'll get a spacer pack with small spacers and start messing around with them to get the right fit.

Any real disadvantages of carbon spacers? I've always had aluminum but the carbon kits seem to have better sizes. Do they all look about the same or will mix and match carbon sets be noticeable?

 

i never had a problem with carbon spacers. i got a pack years ago of mixed sizes and still pull them out when im messing around

 

no disadvantage that I'm aware of. the ones i have do tend to creak a bit more than usual but they're an odd design anyways. AND my bike came with them so....whatever. as for looking the same, they do look different sheen/gloss/matte than aluminum. but you can get different ones i believe. I haven't really worried about it since i usually just grab some aluminum spacers as needed.

 

I9 has cheap spacer kits in lots of colors.

 

No issues with carbon spacers but the ones I have look very different so I don’t mix and match for that reason.

 

I knew they would different than aluminum, but I was wondering how much different carbon ones would look from one another based on brand. Like for aluminum I have a pile from the past and they mostly all look the same and can be used together without looking funny.

The different carbon spacers look different from each other? Is that what you are saying? I was wondering that.

 

I've had headsets come loose pretty regularly with them. My friend also had this issue recently. I'm sure there are levels to them I'm talking the Amazon variety here. Never had a problem with an alloy spacer.
