When do we expect Toyota to release the max water fording ability of our trucks? With all the electronics on board it could be lower then the outgoing 2.25’ / 27”.

Please no warning messages about the dangers of going in water. We know it’s risky. Only interested in whether anyone knows the max depth that will not cause any damage.

The depth will be determine by your intake and exhaust rise (and the length of the river run :))... Most never consider the rise of their tail pipe. If it's not out of the water, the rig will die. I doubt Toyo will be offering a 5' long vertical tail pipe.

    Never.

Toyota no longer talks those numbers for obvious reasons.

And the general rule of thumb is - if you're submerging a wheel hub, Rock Lobster thinks you're a dumdum.

I don’t think tailpipe matters - Grenadier tailpipe isn’t 31” off the ground and prior taco tailpipe isn’t 27” off the ground - exhaust simply bubbles out - intake is what matters

Yeah. Electronics. On my old taco my personal rule of thumb was 2/3 up the wheel max. Basically right above the rocker panel and just where the door starts. Not sure if I am comfortable above that on any vehicle. Probably about 18”. But it would be nice to get a confirmation from Toyota on max depth. It must just be that it’s less than 27” like it was before.

Also consider the height of your breathers (e.g., rear dif).

My thought is that a sudden change in speed, direction, or traction - and that water depth will very easily change from what you thought it was. Its not always the stillwater that swamps you, its the surge. Which is why the older I get, the larger the margin of error between what I'm willing to do versus what the trucks limits are.

I don’t disagree with any of that. But for the old Toyotas they said 27” and Toyota is comically conservative. For the 4G I have no idea what safe is so I’ll be super conservative. I also need to find the diff breather as I have no idea where it is - assume it’s on top of the diff.

What I have personally done, after thrashing of many vehicles in the past -

If a depth check looks like it will touch the bottom of my brake rotors, I seriously reconsider whether the trail is worth the squeeze.

If a depth check verifies that it will submerge the wheel hub, its a no-go (unless its my only means of escape).

If the water looks so nasty that I don't wanna wade in and do a depth-check, its a no-go under any circumstance.

So when you say submerge the wheel hub, I assume you mean if it goes to the top of it. The bottom of it would be like 7-8 inches.

I would at minimum reroute the rear diff breather and it should be fine as far up as the starter.

I will check where both diff breathers are on the 24. I think the third gen front diff breather is up in the engine bay.

I would measure distance from ground to alternator, tie rod boots, bottoms of doors, and breathers. Try to keep those above water as much as possible. 15k or less diff oil replacement intervals would be advised if your dunking your axles repeatedly.

    Send it for science!

Personally, I don’t like having to take the carpet out of my cab to dry, so below bottom of doors for me.
