Does anyone make a bolt-in or almost bolt-in rear end upgrade for the 2nd gen Tacoma that has disc brakes, works with the factory ABS, and isn't a Dana 60 (aka boat anchor)? I'm seeing several swap options, but none that meet all 3 criteria. I'd love a Ford 9" with disc brakes that plugs directly into the factory wiring harness so my ABS light turns off and it doesn't throw codes. If there isn't one, I'll probably just swap in a 3rd gen TRD OR rear end, but I figured I'd ask before spending $2500-3k on a swap that has drums and 30 spline shafts.

Currie did sell an axle like that, but dont see it anymore. Are you breaking your stock axle a lot? Rock crawling? a Dana60 is ok, you can shave a 14bolt to be near 9" clearance. lots of options out there.

My truck is too heavy for me to have faith in the 8” rear end when I’m out in the boonies. I live in the southwest and a stripped ring gear means about a $3000 recovery and a few days trying to survive on my own before they get to me, assuming my satellite communicator works. The problem with the 1 ton rear end is my truck is already too heavy, and if I add even more weight I won’t make it up the sand hills we have here. I’ll be needing a supercharger at that point. I do rock crawling too, but it’s a mix of everything.

How heavy we talking? What's your scale weight?

I've looked into upgrading my rear axle, and I see no reason to worry about upgrading to discs in the rear. The drums seem to work just fine.

The answer is “no”. Nobody makes an F9 with discs and ABS to plug/bolt into a Toyota. If it’s really that expensive to swap a 3G OR axle in, I wouldn’t bother. It’s not that much better. Just get an F9 and do the work. @Airdog has a nice write up on what’s involved.

The cheapest I see the 3rd gen TRD OR rears is ~2100 shipped/gas, but then there's regearing/bearings/brakes and whatnot. I was about to say I'd feel pretty comfortable with an 8.75" ring gear, but I just realized nobody makes 4.56 gears for the 8.75" rear end. I have Nitro 4.56's in my front and I'm not tearing that thing apart again. I guess the 3rd gen axle swap is out regardless.

Other options are LC 9" rear or the Tundra 10.5 rear.

I just put a Tundra 10.5" in a Diamond Housing. (Also wider for my setup)

They make off-the-shelf axle housing for the LC 9" housing. Just need the Diff I believe. Supposedly, they ship quicker. Thicker Housing and shaved Diff to help with the bigger size.

I bent my axle after blowing the rear end several times so went big and tossed the Tundra in.

This is the 9.5" LC not 9" as noted. https://frontrangeoffroadfab.com/tacoma-9-5-diamond-axle-upgrade-05-bolt-in/

They sell this as a bolt in (supply diff of course). Mroe than the $2500 but if you can score a pumpkin could get away with it.

Both of these retain the Tacoma sensors and all that as it has Toyota 6 Lug ends on it. I chose to not add full float for more option on parts for the use the truck gets. Once you go Full Float not many options with sensors if that. I also had a rear disc kit but it works or should with stock drums.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Just throwing this out there for whatever reason. Apparently there is a place called Fleet Pride (no idea if there is one near you) that will custom build propeller shafts for a good price. Looking into an aluminum one. That’s all. Good luck and God bless.

just out of curiosity, if a beefier rear widens track

do you have to match the front by going long travel if retaining IFS or something, to keep the width squared?

It’s a good idea to. Having a wider rear makes steering harder. A lot of vehicles have wider fronts to improve steering. I’m hoping to keep the stock track width.

Depends I got this one wider on purpose due to a LT rear. The LC 9.5 and they also make a fabbed tacoma 8 version are stock width.

I haven't weighed it with all the stuff I'm adding, but all done it will have: a shell, drawers, roof rack, steel bumpers front/rear, winch, rock sliders, 35's, and plenty of camping gear. The 8" blows up all the time out here in Utah under built Toyotas. The local fab shops will tell anyone who walks through the door that it's the most commonly grenaded axle they see, and they usually just axle swap when customers get tired of paying for a tow+new 3rd member after a bunch of wasted PTO. As for discs, they definitely work better in any application, especially one with 2k lbs of extra parts, and I use the truck for towing on top of that. That said, I'll probably just end up with a Diamond 9.5" and stock shafts/drums so I can keep my ABS and parking brake. That's $4500 for a housing with ARB+4.56 3rd member, so my 8" better last me a while. No steep hill climbs on sandstone anytime soon :anonymous:

I guess the 35s prolly play a really big role in it. I don't wheel my rig very hard anymore, and I'm only running 32s on my OEM axle, but when I'm towing I'm often a ton (and I mean that literally) over payload. Light offroading with my camper, I'm only 4-600 pounds less (the tongue weight). No issues yet (knock on wood). And as for brakes, my ABS is still kicking in, meaning my brakes have more than enough oomph to lock the tires (even when my trailer brakes came disconnected).
