Its been stated in the below thread that 3rd Gens need to have their ECU output changed by 0.5 higher. Getting a tune isn't for everyone but the added benefits of the throttle response and shift points alone are worth it.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/the-northstar-agm-battery-voltage-booster-upgrade.604478/

Not to hijack ops thread but @crashnburn80 has put in extensive research into this very topic. So much, that he replied to me in this other thread when AGMs were also brought up. What advice you get on TW is still just that, advice. Whatever you determine, just make sure its right for your use case and current set up.

I'm just coming to the Tacoma from 15 years of driving Rav4's. My experience was that it was heat that killed the battery much more than cold. Between my wife and I we've never had a battery last more than two years in south Texas.

thanks for that. people in TW DO know enough to answer the question and it was answered well.
just dropping an AGM in your truck without adjusting charging voltage is a mistake. to each his own.
AI i used was leaning toward it is ok but looking deeper it hedges its bet. that thread makes it pretty clear it is not a good idea.
    thanks again.
ps. no hijack...OP was considering an AGM.

My Group 31 AGM write up is over here:thumbsup: I may have gone with the Dakota Lithium battery, but I don't think it was out yet.

Have the agm from wallyworld, no tune.

The price difference to the AGM was worth it to not worry about leaky vent caps and corroded terminals. ($40) It's also a 4 year warranty, full replacement. No prorate period.

Even if I'm not squeezing every bit of longevity from the AGM it's worth it to me. I throw the NOCO on it every once in a while and it's been fine.

I bought a NOCO for that reason but I am meeting to with a tuner tomorrow morning to get my alternator voltage adjusted. My X2 Power AGM is sitting in my garage right now charging.

I second this. Project Farm did a test on several batteries (including AGM) and this battery blew everything out of the water. For 140.00 dollars and a three year warranty this is a no brainier.

I looked up the video you were referencing.
Of course, he tested every major parts retailer battery except for NAPA - would've loved to have seen how the Legend, Legend Premium (now AAA) or the AGM stacked up.

Yeah, there were a couple of brands I thought he should have included, but nonetheless he does a decent job of testing......just his voice drives me nuts o_O.
Take consideration that a NAPA Legend CLA ( 24F, two year, less advertised CCA as Everstart Maxx) is 199.00, vs a 139.00 for a three year Ever start Maxx. The value is still with an Everstart.
That said, I've had good experiences with the NAPA line in terms of longevity. I have not been impressed with the longevity of AAA batteries.

OTT tuned my truck over top of a KDMAX Pro tune. Why? For their CARB certification that will pass emissions testing. They also did the .5 volt alternator increase for my now five year old Red Top AGM. I only drive the truck on weekends this past 1.5 years and installed a NOCO to keep the battery charged. While running I see 14.2-14.3 volts from the alternator. :rasta:

edit: I put the OEM battery in my wife's Camry and it’s still humming along.

There's tricks to getting a better price at NAPA.
Having a AAA membership knocks off 10% of most parts.
Or, like me, working there and getting everything at cost. :D

Yesterday my original battery on my 18 TRD OR stopped working, ended up going with Autozone duralast gold 24F. I'm impressed the OEM made it 7 years.

exactly same as me except SR5. replacing OEM battery today with costco 24F. i have been watching my resting voltage and it is hitting under 12v if i let it sit long enough (several days). i was hoping to squeeze out the summer but it is not going to make it. i did add some distilled water as they were getting a low and that helped some but not enough. noticeable symptom of dipping that low (other than starting crank is diminished but always starts) is my center screen reverts to a screen i did not select and the MPG since last fill up reset has been zeroed.
OEM battery went twice as long as i expected.

Or like me, knowing "The Undertaker" I can get it for cost plus a 6 pack lol

Jokes aside my factory 2019 battery is going on 6 years with a little NOCO desulfating action but I keep one of those lithium jump packs for that one day when it does finally kick it.

Im going on 6 years with my battery and its 100% because I leave it on a noco every night when I park.
I put a noco outlet in the wheel well, plug that into the charger that mounted under the hood and it keeps me topped up. In the winter I hook the oil pan heater to the outlet too so I stay charged and my oil stays warm.

i've never had to do any of that, even though we actually get below freezing in the winter at night and even sometimes during the day, but that is rare. i have pretty much ignored the battery other than measuring resting parasitic current draw. i guess in a tropical state like minnesota you would need to pay more attention.
i think the moral is, the OEM batts are not so bad if you give them the attention they need.

edit: i forgot...i did put it thru a conditioning cycle a couple time the last year or 2, with one of those chinese chargers (yonhan brand). it made a bit of difference.
