My vote is as close as practical to the battery. Generally, maximizing the amount of wire protected by the fuse is best.

So between switch and battery then. I need to do some research to see if there are switches on the market with an integrated/integral fuse.

Look up the specs for your winch. My XPS9.5 pulls 480 amps iirc. I have SDHQ battery terminals (expensive but absolutely worth it), SDHQ 500A terminal fuse, and a manual isolation switch (yellow knob in background. need to get a bigger one, mine is only 400A rated). I believe the cables are 4ga. Make sure the fuse and switch are on the hot side, not the ground side and take your time routing and sheathing those cables. No hot surfaces, sharp edges, etc. I sliced a piece of fuel line to put in a hole in the core support where the cable pass through. Also, I use a 24f AGM from Walmart with a tune that puts out 14.1-14.3 V.
