Hello my 2010 Tacoma has started having a problem that I think is coming from the rear carrier bearing. Almost every time I come to a stop or move after being stopped I feel a jolt from under the truck. I replaced the carrier bearing less than 2 years ago due to a similar problem. I have looked at the carrier bearing as well and it looks like it’s already worn out due to black sludge coming from it. Wanted to see if there was any beefier solutions to fix the problem.

There are a couple of alternatives to the OEM style carrier bearing. One of them is the IEDLS carrier bearing, which is originally designed for the Ranger but can be adapted to fit our trucks. I went this way myself. Another option is the "Wookie strength" bearing, which is an industrial pillow-type bearing that is not really suitable for a daily - more intended for machines that will be beat to death on extreme terrain.

Here are some info threads on the IEDLS bearing:

Here is my post after installing it:

I've been running it without a lick of trouble since then (August 2022, probably 75k miles) and it hasn't sagged or drooped at all.

Just replace the entire DS and add a CVJ. Good luck with your truck and welcome to TW.

If you replaced that bearing with a Chinese-made cheap aftermarket bearing, that would explain its short life span. Stick with Spicer bearings, they supply the oem line. They make two versions, one for 4x4 and one for 4x2 Prerunners. Either will work. The 4x4 has a dust cover and costs more. I have the 4x2 version in my 4x4 and it is going on 100K miles. I only got it because it was the only one available when I needed it. I had gone through two cheap bearings that barely lasted a year each.

Yeah I think that is what I ordered the first time. I appreciate the recommendation I’m gonna order a spicer and throw it on this weekend!
