    Hey all,

I recently replaced the lower intermediate steering shaft in my 2009 gen tacoma. However, when I did, I made the mistake of turning the wheels (not the steering wheel) because I thought I had knocked them off center while hammering out the lower spline connector by the steering rack. The steering wheel is now way off from center (about 60 degrees).

The lower spline was really difficult to remove and difficult to put back on (lots of rust). I'd like to avoid having to hammer it back out/in to fix the steering wheel. Even if I did, I'm not convinced that I wouldn't just over-correct in the wrong direction.

I want to avoid a front-end alignment since that will mean they'll have to crank way up on one tie-rod end and way down on the other.

I've considered removing the steering wheel itself; mine is just a horn and airbag, so the wiring shouldn't be too much of an issue. Others have noted in this other thread that this could cause issues with the wire spiral assembly.

Other than the steering wheel off center, the truck drives straight with no problems.

What would you all suggest as the best way to get the steering wheel back to center?

The right way is to set the front tires straight, break loose the intermediate shaft, carefully turn the steering wheel to center it and reinstall the intermediate shaft.

Thank you all. This is really helpful. Not sure whether I'll pop off the steering wheel or bang out the lower steering shaft, but one of the two will definitely work. Thanks!
