I was a dealership tech and a service manager for long time. I always had a serious problem with putting an entry level tech in the quick lane. One loose drain plug (or wheel for that matter) is a serious liability. I could tell some horror stories.

I insisted on these new hires working along side one of the experienced techs for a few weeks. I gave the mentor tech a bonus for training him/her…..this was very effective and it also built a team atmosphere in the shop. I had to leave the dealership life because of the pushback from upper management, among many other things.
I have a saying that I live by: “Price is long forgotten when the quality remains”. Also, you need to invest some money in your crew to have happy and productive personnel.

@tacomatrddave, I wish you many years of health and happiness with your recovery.

Agreed! Though many don’t want to make an investment, they view the new as cheap labor/higher profits.
My buddy is a lead at a dealership, and he tries to go back and double check work in the newer staff,,,,, tries

There ARE still some good dealers out there……but they are dwindling. When I was the lead tech at a Honda/Volvo dealer they were focused on quality…….and we were super successful in terms of profits. Regulars would literally give us an open checkbook……”just fix it, I trust you people”.

Most, if not all of the hundreds of of the larger service centers, and the good small garages I provided service to, had double checks and sign offs on things like wheel torque, drain and fill caps and few other things. They did it all the time. Not just during training. Accountability is the key.

Adding to the cases of the massive oil leak and possible catastrophic engine failure.
I bought my 2019 TRD Sport 09/24 with 92,000 miles. From the first owner with a wad of receipts from work done @ Toyota dealer while it was enrolled in a 90,000 Toyota Care program.
For 6 months the previous owner complained about engine ticking noises and the dealer eventually In 02/24 @ 84,000 miles "Replaced all exhaust lifters on bank 1", cylinder head removal/replace.

In 10/24 99k miles I did engine oil change and all drive line gear oils. This is the only owner-maintenance. I have been doing oil changes on 4 previous tacomas for 30 years.
Re-used original factory oil filter housing, replacing both O-rings and carefully seating the filer housing. (O-ring in the correct groove of course).
When you thread it on there, and contact the o-ring, it's a pretty hard stop and it seems obvious to not tighten it more, or barely.
Unfortunately, this is a loose end in the blame game if the oil filter housing installation and/or crack turns out to be the problem.

Anyway, on to the catastrophe -

Last week, 7 months later @ 102,000 miles while driving up a 7 mile 1500 foot paved mountain road grade, I smell something but it's unclear to me if it is my vehicle or the one in front of me. Then smoke coming from engine compartment, obviously burning oil. I pulled over still not sure what is going on and the engine then starts knocking noises, so I shut it down. Engine temp gauge is still in the middle where it always is, no overheating.
Oil everywhere all over the front of the engine, pulleys, belts and even some splash up on the plastic top guard. Burning off and draining on the asphalt.

I roll the truck backwards and was able to turn it around. Rolled all the way back down the mountain using no-power brakes and hand brake. Towed with a strap another mile to my local mechanic shop.

My mechanic sprayed/cleaned the engine and refilled it with oil and rand it on the rack. NO leaks, but knocking noise low in the engine and dipstick shows metal color and shavings.
Wherever the oil gushed from, it was not leaking at low-temp idle. Maybe needs full operating temperature and pressure to blow.

I checked with another local mechanic who is capable of engine replacement work and apparently his favorite aftermarket engine maker is not yet making this 3.5. And if I'm going to a new Toyota engine that I should take it there.
We ran it a little to get it on and off the trailer and to a Toyota Dealer in Carson City, NV. It is now checked in and I'm waiting for the bad news. Or good news if Toyota will help on this.
It's obviously out of warranty but all records show its Toyota care for almost all of its life (other than oil changes/ brake work at a reputable independent mechanical shop), and Toyota head removal 16 months ago.

But not counting on any help, we'll see.

Any thoughts or comments appreciated !

There's simply no chance of getting any help @ 6 years and 102K.
You can throw the folder full of documents at them and they're gonna hand it right back to you.
