1996 Tacoma 2.7l. I installed new oil pump. I packed gears with Vaseline. Drive pulley is engaged into drive gear. Cranking engine with spark plugs removed. Cannot get pump to pickup oil and create oil pressure. What do I need to do to get oil pressure, pump to work

Did you install a new oil filter? If so remove it and fill it with oil.

If I remember correctly there was a guy on this forum with the exact same issue, he discoved that the gasket for the outer cover was too thick. Did you use a toyota gasket?

The new oil pump uses an o ring. There was no other gasket with the pump

I stand corrected... I wonder where I read that about the gasket being too thick.

How are you measuring oil pressure? Wet gauge in the sensor hole by the filter? Or are you just watching the dash light to see if it will go out?

Honestly you're probably fine, I don't think the 2-300 or so rpms is enough to satisfy the sensor and turn out the dash warning light. Probably needs to be idling up around 800 rpm..

If you're really worried you could take the oil filter off and see if oil comes out during cranking..

When I do these at work I just pack assembly lube into the pump and fire it up

When replacing my timing cover and oil pump. Packed with petroleum jelly and did the crank without starting thing too the oil light never went off. Tried it a few times then said screw it and started up. Oil light turned off after like 3 very long seconds. No issue.

If you feel confident everything is back together (and there’s oil in it) just send it. It’ll turn off.

I have started and run engine for a short period but still did not get any oil pressure. Don’t want to run for too long and screw up engine

It's less Tacoma and more mod
It takes a long time just cranking to get it primed the first time. Guarantee you you haven't done it long enough yet
