Starting Problems and HVAC odor??

Hey guys,
Got 2 problems today that I would like to run by the masses. I got a 2010 DC TRD Off Road with about 23,800 miles on it, bought it new approx. 1 year ago... My first issue is when starting the truck.... It does not happen all the time, but sometimes it is taking more than a few extra cranks to turn over... Just when you think the truck has turned over, you release the key only to find that the truck is not running.... I didnt think much of it when it was 20 degrees outside, however, with weather being in the 90's, I don't see why this should be happening.... I have tried fuel system cleaners, I replace the air filter about every 12,000 or when it is dirty, and change my oil every 5000 with Mobil 1. I did not notice this when I first purchased my truck, it is a problem that appears to be getting worse.... Any ideas?

My second is my HVAC system. There is a smell coming from it that I can not seem to get rid of.... Anyone have any experance in cleaning the HVAC system in their car?? I replaced my cabin air filter with the air filter mod that I found on the fourm... It appears to be clean, however, I will replace it... Dealership wanted 140 to do a "HVAC system deodorizing"...

Do you have any ememies? Could someone have tampered with your truck? I have heard of people pooring noxious things like ground shrimp/fish juice into the cowl vents. Seems odd that you are having 2 issues at once to me. I will say I did have a few times when my truck wouldn't startimmediately like that around the same odometer reading. It worked itself out and never had the problem again in 77k. Check to see you aren't using a large keyring, hanging the keyring over top of the rubber part of the key, or have a dirty key. I would suspect the anti-theft system or key.

 

There is a TSB about a computer caused no-start condition. If it doesn't start, then you turn it fully off, and successfully start it the second time, then you have the TSB issue. I don't recall the number off-hand, but there is a TSB list sticky on this forum.

 

The 2011 owners manual suggests that the fresh air damper on the A/C be left open (not on recirc) when the truck is not running. This must help those odors to vent out over night.

 

The HVAC problem is not that big of an issue... It was just noticed by the dealership.... It doesn't smell horrible, however, I can smell it... I was just wondering what people are doing to correct the problem... I have heard spray anything from lysol to scrubbing bubbles into the cowl vent... The starting issue is my most pressing issue..... This worries me, as the truck is still pretty damn new...

This. Mine's only done it one time, but it sure made my heart jump sitting in the middle of nowhere with no cell signal.

What does your HVAC smell like? Mine has an intermittent smell also. It smells like gear oil. First time it happened I had just recently had the transmission serviced and thought it might be residual oil somewhere. But it's continued to be an intermittent issue. Only smells inside the truck, and usually after a half hour drive on the freeway or longer.

 

Ac problem is caused by bacterial/fungus growth from moisture and organic material. Kill it with lysol, or similar disinfectant aerosol. BG Frigi-Fresh works well too.
