My next shotgun will the Remington Model 887 Nitro Mag Tactical. That combined with some solid 00 Buckshot like Jim said will do the trick for just about anything.

However, as the others have mentioned, pepper spray would be much lighter and would probably do the trick for most animals that you would encounter on your trails.

00 buck wounds more deer than buck fever. I would stick with a large caliber pistol or rifle if you cant legal have a pistol. .44 and up not including the 45acp.

If you are being charged by a bear..they are going to be inside of 20 yards or so yes? Empty 2-3 shells of 00 Buck at that range in the face...sorry that animal is slowing down if not dying.

Your going to have a death grip on the gun yank the trigger shhot low into the chest and piss it off more... Use something that guarantees deep penetration. Why do thing serious bear hunters use hard cast bullets instead of normal hunting rounds, because its penetration that kills them not superficial wounds.
Often times the partition, which is a bullet for heavy game isnt enough to pentrate hide and thick bone.

Id rather yank the trigger and be off target with a spread of projectiles than a single one :p

It gets me when people think that since buckshot spreads you dont have to aim. Yes it spreads but it doesnt "clear a room" as they say.
And when you figure that a pellet of buckshot carries about 200 ft.lbs on energy you see where buckshot looses its awesomeness.

So I am in the woods alot for hiking camping offroading, really any chance to get away from civilization. I do like shooting nature and wildlife photography. What I usually like to do is truck in (or use the good old honda 300) set up base camp, then from there use a pack and hike it. The idea of getting a gun came about this summer when I was out camping the entire summer and coyotes, and moose came pretty close within 100m or so of the camp if not closer, and bears were in the area though not a "real" threat.

Buy a used guide gun like a marlin in 45-70 or 450 marlin. They are cheapish and deadly.

If you feel you need or want a shotgun I would only use slugs if bear were a concern. There are way too many cases where buckshot has failed to kill. If your in the position where you feel you need to kill a bear you dont want to end up with just wounding it.

Guide guns = awesome; however, for lightweight packing, just pick up a Judge or Public Defender. You can load 410 shotshell and .45LC.

That being said, if I go anywhere where there may be a potential for bears (I used to live in Montana so I speak from experience), I'm carrying at least a .44 revolver, a good rifle (probably why I'm out in the woods to begin with) and spray. I'll carry the extra weight to be prepared.

    thanks for the laughs

This canadian cant carry a pistol. Not sure if its all of canada or certain states?

OP a guide gun would be great. I was going to reccomend the .45/70 govt
    something similar to this
    http://www.basspro.com/Marlin-1895--45/70-GOVT-Lever-Action-Rifle/product/10218339/-1361204

The .300 would probably be a good round as well.
